VHS : Hear My Song - Director's Version [1991]
It doesn't matter if you have never heard of this Irish tenor, or even like that kind of music, this is a marvelously warm film. Adrian Dunbar is a promoter of a club, in the UK, who normally books look-a-likes, however after several disasters he decides to find the man himself - Josef Locke (yes, this is the correct spelling). He travels to Ireland and after some searching he finally meets him and persuades him to come back and do one last performance. The reason for Josef being in Ireland is to avoid UK tax, of which he owes an undisclosed amount. With the UK police trying to catch him this is a more than pleasant caper. (And I bet you can't help humming the main theme, "Hear my song")

VHS : Brassed Off [1996]
Channel Four developed Brassed Off and The Full Monty at the same time. A man called David Aukin, I think had to decide which to make. He could only choose one, so he chose Brassed Off.

Although The Full Monty is an excellent film he made the right choice as Brassed Off is more complex with a greater insight into the problems facing "old" industries in the 1990's in Yorkshire.

Well done Mr Aukin and everyone who worked on this brilliant film.

In this war time drama everybody seems to be doing it - and I don't mean their bit for King and country. Sometimes the events of World War II appear to be used as mere padding for a series of gratuitous sex scenes. This otherwise good war time drama would be considerably improved by the removal of some of the unnecessary breasts and bare bottoms.
"Oh Max, the weather was simply beautiful during the fall of France - let's have sex!!"

VHS : The Student Prince [1997]
A brilliant film which tracks the progress of a prince through his English degree at Cambridge University. The film focuses on the prince, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Prince William, the bodyguard, Robson Green and a Fulbright scholar, Tara Fitzgerald. As Fitzgerald helps the prince with his work the working of the eternal love triangle is inevitable. Sad, funny and moving.

I don't know what age audience the film makers were targeting but I imagine 13 to 18 would find it enjoyable, or if you have not read the book. If you have you will find it a very disappointing adaptation. I suppose some changes to the story line are inevitable if one only has 100 minutes to deliver over 240 pages of complex writing, but none of those changes enhanced enjoyment of the novel for me. The acting was so-so, over aggressive Tara Fitzgerald wearing one sultry expression from start to finish, and Anthony Delon delivering slightly over the top "Frenchness". Which is a shame....I came across the novel whilst on holiday in Cornwall (but of course!), and being a fan of du Maurier's work I thought I'd give it a go one afternoon and I could not put it down, ok the plot ... VHS : I Capture The Castle [2003]
This film faithfully follows the story of Dodie Smith's beautiful and sometimes painful novel, but cannot capture its magic or the lyrical narrative which is so important (and what is really successful) about the novel. Read the book first, then enjoy this film for the pictures!

No, this is not a faithful adaptation, but it is a very good adaptation. As this is a Masterpiece Theatre production, there is an introduction and a conclusion that is included, but not part of the actual film. The conclusion explains why so much of the novel was left out and explains some important plot points of the novel that were excluded from the film. This includes the the "Paris scene" as one reviewer distressingly noted--which ties up the loose ends concerning Count Fosco.

Noting that they wanted to make a 2 hour film, they did a superb job. And, really, this film would be more fun if you haven't read the book so please don't let that deter you if you haven't read the book. Actually, if you haven't read the book, I'd suggest you see the film first. That will make you ... Read More:

VHS : The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill But Came Down A Mountain [1995]
This movie is a real gem - certainly not your average Hollywood action spectacle but a rather quiet movie about people - full of warmth and a lovely sense of humor - that you'll want to see again and again.

In telling the story of a Welsh village united by their pride and love for their country to overcome their differences and undertake the Herculean effort to raise their hill to officially be a mountain the movie really celebrates the uniqueness of the individual and the undefeatable human spirit in general.

In an age that serves you all those horrible pictures of violence and misery from around the world on a daily basis it's a movie that leaves you hopeful and a little more positive about the human race in general and pretty much in love with the people of Wales in particular. ... Read More:
