VHS : Le Diner De Cons
This film was a wonderful discovery and proved to be a great family film for us and teenage daughter. She said she wasn't sure when it began if she was going to like it but stuck with it and loved it.

None of us speak French so relied on the subtitles to a certain extent. However the actor playing M. Pignon is superb - masterly comic timing and you couldn't help but watch him. The whole cast delivered great perfomances while the plot developed at a good pace, spinning the situation further out of control. We all laughed out loud.

I can highly recommend this comedy if you are looking for something better than average.

... but I found myself helpless with laughter, tears streaming down my face at various points. Great farce, enormous fun. Can't quite see why some critics get so exercised about what is ultimately a harmless but nonetheless delightfully entertaining piece

VHS : The Closet
This is a typical 'French' take on PC society, what the British use to do but no longer do. You can see the situations here and know you may have watched something similar developing at work, home or among your friends.

GD is typical of the overbearing, bullying oaf everyone has worked with at some time and it is bittersweet watching his comeupance, whilst the oject of his bullying climbs the ranks.

This is a film based on a book - something James Ivory the director has done in the past but to better effect than he does here.Visually the film is sumptuous to look at and if you are a fan of painting and fashion and the sights and sounds of Paris I would recommend it to you, but if you are a fan of films that have action or an interesting and intriguing storyline then Le Divorce is not likely to please you.
And I would point Merchant-Ivory fans towards any of their other productions.

Sorry. Can't help it. Just don't like this one. It's silly and vaguely unpleasant - but not in the way that a black comedy could be. The actors hold their reputable heads above water - just - but there are better European films than this one. Save your money.
