VHS : A World Apart [1988]
I saw this movie only once, in 1988 and never forgot it. This is a deep and meaningful story (a true story if I remember correctly), with outstanding photography, that stand as a testimony of an era: Apartheid.
My English and History teachers thought it was a good movie for a school outing, to raise our awareness of geo-politics, and they couldn't have been more right. I'm French and at the time, I had been learning English for 5 years. My class saw it in the original english version, but that didn't matter; the difficulty of the accent, and therefore reading subtitles took nothing away from its beauty, and its impact.
In 1988, Nelson Mandela was still in prison, and Zola Budd was making the news for allegedly running in South Africa ... Read More:

VHS : Pulp Fiction [1994]
I liked this film when I first saw it and now I have changed my mind with repeated watching. Like all Tarantino films, the dialogue between characters is unnatural. It feels like one person talking to themselves. The characters all talk in this faux intelligent geeky way about tiny things and there is no discernable differences between outlook or delivery of the characters words. The story doesn't hang together very well and the use of celebrity cameos is just celuloid cronyism. I fell for the hype, save your time and money and don't buy into this trash. Travolta is a fake, Jackson can't act, QT is annoying, Thurman is lovely, Keitel is cheesey and not at all hard like he makes out. There is too much wrong with this film to call it a classic. It's ... Read More:

VHS : Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead [1990] [1991]
This play is a myth in Shakespearean theater, maybe even a cult. When the play came out in 1967 it was acclaimed as a postmodern rewriting of our vision of the world. A tragedy like Hamlet's is here entirely captured through the eyes of the two secondary characters in the play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Finally someone was looking at great dramatic historical events from the point of view of two insignificant witnesses, maybe even not witnesses, just people there unwilling and un-chosen, just there by accident or opportunism. They look and understand nothing. They feel something is hidden from them but they do not know what. They capture glimpses and tidbits here and there from behind a window or through a closed door and the plot is slowly reconstructed ... Read More:

VHS : Heart Of Darkness [1993]
Nicolas Roeg (Walkabout,Performance, etc)directs the difficult, intense novel by J.Conrad & tries to capture the menace and suspense of a trip up the Congo river in Victorian times with all its new frontier fears and uncertainties. Slowly we see the changes in the boats captain, Marlow, ably played by Tim Roth, as he loses his naivity and becomes mesmorised by both the jungle and the lure of meeting the mysterious Kurtz at the innermost ivory station. (Yes, youve seen it in Apocalypse Now).John Malkowich has the tough role as Kurtz,an impossible role as he has to be a man half god, half savage, as the jungle takes its toll on him. Good steamy shots, scary locals and some `whats it all about` make this a fine if flawed film, but thats life!

VHS : Everyone Says I Love You [1997]
I added this film to my love film list after realising I hadn't actually seen that many Woody Allen films. Since I have a pretty extensive film collection and am a complete movie addict, I thought that was an error that needed rectifying :)

As a modern musical I was fully prepared that I might not like this film, but I absolutely adored it. It's a wonderful concoction of love, romance, quirkiness, whimsy and theatrical numbers.

The film stars Goldie Hawn, Alan Alda, Ed Norton, Drew Barrymore, Natasha Lyonne, Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts, Tim Roth & Woody Allen. It follows the path of one family (a quite rich liberal New York family) over the course of a year. The loves, the losses, the crushes, and the mistakes they make along ... Read More:

VHS : Gridlock'd [1997]
With a decent plot and very little in the way of action, it is amazing that this film works so effectively. Basically a day-in-the-life tale following the misfortunes of two drug addicts, Spoon (Tim Roth) and Stretch (Tupac Shakur) as they desperately try to kick heroin habits and avoid the unfortunate attention of a local gangster.

The dialogue is quick and funny and the two leads are very impressive. Shakur is a true revelation and Roth does his usual swaggy/cool style even with his character's boundaries. The film tries to be moral at times, but due to the comedy - just isn't. With a great soundtrack and a live performance at the end from the rapper himself, Gridlock'd succeeds magnificently.

It's 2:40 in the morning and have just seen this film on TV and I've come straight online to buy it - it's THAT good!

A refreshing change from the Hollywood glitz, drama and special effects, the film really relies on the actors and the story line and has the most amazing cliff-hanger ending. It is the most enthralling film I've seen for a long while - I didn't want to blink for fear of missing a moment of it.

I'm absolutely hooked and would recommend this film to everyone.

I am dying to know what happens after the ending!
