VHS : Small Sacrifices [1988]
I worked on this trial as a member of the judicial staff in Oregon, so have personal experience of Diane Downs, the witnesses, prosecutor and defense counsel. Like everyone else, I was very dubious when I heard that a film was scheduled for production. I was very surprised that when the film was released, it was a very accurate reflection of what I witnessed in the six-week trial. In fact, the film of the trial was less dramatic than the trial itself, especially when daughter Christie testified, which remains the most dramatic moment I have ever witnessed. Farrah Fawcett did a superb job, although to this day I don't know why she adopted a southern accent, when Diane doesn't speak this way. If you have read Ann Rule's book of the same name, ... VHS : Murder By Numbers [2002]
Sandra Bullock stars as Cassie Mayweather, a tough police detective who's investigating a murder with the help of her new partner (Ben Chaplin). There are a lot of clues that just don't add up, until Cassie begins to suspect two smart, rich, and very arrogant high school students (Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt).

Actually, we know who did it from the first moments of the film; the fun lies in seeing how Cassie will connect the dots and catch them. This is terrific movie, full of suspense and action. Bullock's character wears a mask of bravado but is really quite wounded from a tragic incident in her past; this makes her vulnerable and very likeable, and she has great screen presence. Chaplin holds his own with her, mixing detective ... Read More:

VHS : Stanley Kubrick [1962]
This box set contains 8 of some of the most iconic and brilliant motion pictures made by THE greatest man in the business. Kubrick really is a god at movie making, he may have only ever won one oscar but his movies are some of the most influential movies ever. For example Space Oddesy's introductrion of music into movies and a Clockwork Orange, possibly the most contrevesial movies ever made! Dr. Strangelove a movie that was released at a time when the world may well have fallen into a nuculear war. These are just a few examples of how Kubrick was a daring and risque director and his movies are all the better for it and each one is a landmark in movie history all trying something new and being unique masterpieces. This is the best selection of movies ... Read More:

5.Minority Report [2002] starring: Tom Cruise, Max von Sydow, Steve Harris, Neal McDonough, Patrick Kilpatrick

VHS : Minority Report [2002]
Based on the novel by Sci-fi god Philip K Dick, Minority Report was Stephen Speilberg's stab at creating a dark and thoughtful futuristic who-dunnit in the mold of Blade Runner. Whilst it's not quite in the same league, Minority Report is still one of the most intelligent and best looking films Speilberg has had a hand in. His choice of pretty boy Cruise as his embattled lead is also inspired - pasty, hair shorn, close to emotional and physical breakdown - old Tom does a fine job playing against type.
The story involves 'Pre-Cogs' - people who can 'see' future crimes before they happen - the ultimate agenda being to totally eradicate murder and serious crime. When Cruise gets accused of a 'future' murder he goes on the run and is hunted by his former colleagues ... Read More:

VHS : Down by Law
This is one of the best films I have ever seen. The photography is stunning throughout, atmospherically filmed in b&w, capturing both the seedy side of New Orleans in the 1980s and the beauty of the Louisiana bayous. It is essentially a black comedy about the interplay between the three central characters (Tom Waits is Zack, the unemployed DJ, John Lurie is Jack the small time pimp and Roberto Benigni is Bob, the wacky Italian tourist) who for dubious reasons all find themselves thrown together in a New Orleans jail. The film is beautifully understated - there are many periods when nothing much is happening, but it's magnificently enacted, adding comic tension, creating extra dynamic between the characters. The director, Jim Jarmusch said about the film: "I would call ... Read More:

VHS : Scarlet Street [1946]
When Christopher Cross (Edward G. Robinson), a meek, middle-aged cashier, ran one rainy night to the aid of Kitty March (Joan Bennett) who was being beaten by her boy friend, Johnny Prince (Dan Duryea), he had no idea how his life would be changed. It's probably also fair to say that Robinson, Bennett, Duryea and director Fritz Lang had no idea at the time that they were making one of the great noirs, a movie so good, in fact, that in my view it transcends the noir genre.

Cross is married to a shrew. He does the dishes wearing a frilly apron. He's taken for granted by just about everyone he knows. After 25 years with the bank, he has just been given a gold watch. And he paints. He loves to paint; it's the only thing that gives him happiness. When he meets Kitty and walks ... Read More:

VHS : Detour [1945]
What neither of the above reviews mentions is how incredibly funny Detour is ... it had me howling with laughter. Admittedly, a glass or two of wine helped. As for the ending? Aw, come on guys, the title's Detour and what better end-of-the-line for the end-of-the-road villainess? I'm still shopping for a copy of my own - roll on, region 2. Can't wait.
