VHS : Who Dares Wins [1982]
This is actually a pretty bad film. The ideology is not as perverse as in those films Collins made later. However, my main misgivings about the film are that it is implausible and quite frankly boring for a long time. The whole concept of an ex-SAS man joining terrorists for no particular reason isn't very convincing and you can't help wondering why a group of highly organized terrorists (who later become pretty clueless) fall for it. The film starts with a pretty powerful scene but then meanders for quite a long time building up towards the great finale. Overall, I think Who dares wins could have been an interesting 45 minutes episode of The Professionals but the story doesn't carry a feature film. Although reasonably successful at the time ... [BEWARE SPOILERS]

I don't know whether I've ever watched a film in which I identified more with all the characters than I did in this emotionally wrenching masterwork from the late, great Louis Malle. It is part of the genius of Malle to, like Shakespeare, make every character real and to see and present the depth of even those slightly off stage.

I could begin with the youngest, the daughter Sally (Gemma Clarke) who says little and is always at a slight distance, her serious face in the backseat of the car seemingly thinking dark thoughts, her face down the hallway at night, seemingly knowing that her father has committed adultery with her brother's fiancée--yet not knowing. Louis Malle wanted a certain expression on her ... Read More:

New Year's Eve (or Hogmany as its known in Scotland) is not the same without watching 'Scotch and Wry'. It is one of the things I miss through living in England. But that was until I bought this tape and I never tire of watching it. The jokes may be old but its still a laugh a minute. My favourite sketches are 'Holiday in Saltcoats', 'The Corner Shop', and of course any Video would not be complete without the Reverence IM Jolly and WE Free Ministers. If you are a Scot and you are homesick, buy this and you will feel tons better.

VHS : Babylon 5 - A Call To Arms [1999]
Babylon 5 is one of my all time favourite science fiction series and although this first season is not the best the series has to offer, it is still nothing less than enthralling and entertaining. This first season sees all the pieces moved into place for what is to follow and although there are some bumps along the way the show remains a cut above many other first Sci-fi first seasons. Season one is probably one of the more episodic of all the Babylon 5 seasons but despite this the arc plot that stretches throughout all five seasons is present and the writing that has done into the entire plot is far superior than that of many other series.

The show is also quite mature in its dealing with storylines, with themes that include war, peace, ... Read More:
