VHS : The Devils [1971]
This film deserves so much more credit for what it achieves from Huxley's original. While some of the performances are a little shakey, this film represents one of the great Oliver Reed's finest moments - he exudes power and sexuality as Grandier, and the film achieves some particularly powerful/disturbing moments in the depiction of the ergot-addled nunnery.

HOWEVER...

This film has truly been victimised by the censors and there is Still no DVD version available - surely with the garbage which the censors let through these days this film can be restored and re-released?

VHS : Bear Island [1979]
This is one great spy story and the film makes justice of the original Alistair Maclean novel. It's a shame we can only get a low quality VHS version of this classic. Other Maclean stories cinematic adaptations, like the Guns of Navarone or When Eagles Dare are already available in DVD. When will Bear Island come?

3.The Charge Of The Light Brigade [1968] starring: Trevor Howard, Vanessa Redgrave, John Gielgud, Harry Andrews, Jill Bennett

VHS : The Charge Of The Light Brigade [1968]
Even in its abused, neglected state (hence the four-star rating instead of five) Richardson's "Charge of the Light Brigade" is still a fantastic piece of cinema and a sadly overlooked classic in the same league as the wonderful "Oh, What a Lovely War". At a time when most modern young British directors regularly churn out terrible mockney gangster flicks, wet rom-coms or stagnant period dross it seems such a shame that this bold example of British cinema should suffer such a fate. Sir David Puttnam even recently stated how extremely angry he was that Light Brigade remains completely ignored as the quality piece of cinematic art that it obviously is.

Richardson himself had planned this film as his masterpiece but became so disillusioned ... Read More:

VHS : Agatha [1979]
Imaginative and well-made speculation as to what may have happened to Agatha Christie during the 10 days in which she disappeared in December 1926. Vanessa Redgrave is not one of my favourite actresses but she is superb here, playing the aristocratic yet very diffident first lady of crime, ill-at-ease with her own success. Timothy Dalton also shows what a diverse actor he is with his role of the starchy Colonel Christie, wanting to divorce Agatha so that he can marry his secretary Nancy Neele. Dustin Hoffman puts in a fun and exuberant turn as the American journalist who tails Agatha to Harrogate. The solution to the mystery is a bit over-the-top, but the actors pull it off with style.

VHS : Wagner [1984]
A great film about a great man - albeit with some unpleasant traits.

Dramatic portrayal of a dramatic life, from his early days as rising composer to friend, confident and 'in-house' composer to King Ludwig II of Bavaria.. Features all the struggles as he tries to stage the 'unperformable' Ring.

Filmed on location and with great supporting acting from Redgrave, Guilgud et al. Most magical is the way the music is blended in with the action. The great chords of lament as the beginning of Act III of Tristan play as King Ludwig reviews with dismay the remains of his defeated army, for example.

Subtle, yet powerful, telling of his affair with Cosima.

A joy to watch, seven hours is just not enough!!

VHS : Camelot [1967]

Sumptuous lavish but dreadfully over-long musical telling the story of King Arthur and his Round Table. Some very good songs here, and Richard Harris at his most handsome is in fine voice, but has some stiff competition from Franco Nero! The versatility and talents of Nero can be seen clearly here, when compared to his somewhat dark and brooding role in 'The Virgin And The Gypsy' that followed a couple of years later. Lionel Jeffries surpasses himself in yet another one of his fabulous character roles as King Pellinore.

Nice musical this, but one really has to be in the mood to watch such a terribly long movie of three hours!

"What I remember principally about Speyer was the great pleasure of meeting you, Miss Schlegel."

Thus does Ruth Wilcox (Vanessa Redgrave) sincerely complement Margaret Schlegel (Emma Thompson). And it is from the meeting and friendship of these two ladies that the fate of Howards End - the name of Mrs Wilcox's rural home - is ultimately determined. As Anthony Hopkins states in the interviews that come as extras to this DVD, Howards End is a story about property and inheritance. "Isn't it curious that our carpet fits?" says Helen Schlegel (Helena Bonham Carter) to her sister Margaret towards the end of the movie, as if fate and unseen forces had been at work all along.

This was Merchant Ivory's third E.M. Foster adaptation, and arguably the best. There is ... Read More:

First of all, I must admit that I've never read the book.

To be honest, I didn't even know that this film was an adaptation until I read the other reviews on Amazon. But whilst I can imagine the rolling landscapes and the charged emotions being sensuously described in a novel, a film cannot do this. And so whilst the occasional and seemingly random occurrences do eventually come together at the end, I spent the whole time waiting for something to happen, and then just breathed a sigh of relief when the whole thing was finally over.

As well as those few plot points that tied together of course, there were several blind alleys which (in my opinion) added absolutely nothing to the story. And so whilst the coup near the end of the film, Jeremy Iron's revelation ... Read More:
