VHS : The Quiet Man [1952]
This St. Patrick’s Day my wife and I decided to build a fire and enjoy this Irish classic. The music, the scenery, the story line and the dialogue ensure its enduring status.

A real test of a work of art is whether the viewer keeps finding something new in it time after time. “The Quiet Man “ meets this test. This time I was impressed by the cultural tension between the Americanism of Sean Thornton (John Wayne) and the Irishness of the other characters, something which I had not picked up on so keenly in past viewings.

Whether you are ready for your first or fiftieth viewing, “The Quiet Man” will always be a treat.

VHS : She Wore A Yellow Ribbon [1950]
Another reviewer might not be so critical of the "sentimentalisation of male violence" if a redskin (oops - I mean native American) war party was kicking in his cabin door, murdering and scalping his siblings or kidnapping his children. It is a luxury for those safe in their cosy armchairs to criticise the military zeitgeist - a luxury that they might not enjoy if professional soldiers were not so prepared to risk everything to engage in the horrors of the "male violence" they so abhor. John Ford's film is a classic depiction of the 'old army', the old cavalry of the plains and the diverse characters of the professional soldiers who served in it, bound together by duty, honour and their shared hardships. It is a glamourised evocation of the ... Read More:

VHS : The Princess And The Pirate [1944]
one of bob hope best films (certainly in the top three-in my view)sees the legendary comic playing the role of a cowardly ham actor, inadvertaintly getting mixed up with blood thirsty pirates and buried treasure(all in glorius technicolour)laughs a plenty-the gags and one liners keep coming(you often have to listen very closey or you miss half of them)the stunning virginia mayo(often seen in the classic danny kaye comedies of the same era)provides the main support/love interest.great to finally see this old classic on dvd-the colour/picture quality is very good on the whole-the colour does fade/blur on one or two occasions,briefly-but for a film this old it is not too much of a surprise-and certainly does not spoil the enjoyment.will bob hope ... VHS : Rio Grande [1951]
Rio Grande was filmed in the year of my birth. With that in mind and thinking how life has changed so much over the last 50 years maybe this film shows just how culture and values have changed. I had seen this film many times at the cinema as a child and on TV. In all honesty I didn't require reading any review to decide on purchasing. So how do I balance bias with objectivity? Not easy maybe but I'll try.

The concept for this film came from a short story printed in a New York paper. For those interested in such things this DVD comes complete with a short but extremely interesting extra about the making of the film and the politics behind its creation. This extra also contains most interesting interviews with co stars Ben Johnson (Trooper ... Read More:

VHS : The Informer [1935]
John Ford directed this deeply dark vision of poverty and revenge in 1920s Ireland in 1935 and got an Oscar for his efforts. And rightly so. It tells the story of Gypo Nolan, (not the sharpest knife in the drawer and brilliantly played by Victor McLaglen), who after being ousted from the equivalent of the IRA during the Irish Rebellion becomes destitute and hungry. In order to put food on the table and save his sweetheart from prostitution he decides to turn-coat and inform on one of his former comrades for the reward money. Then things really start to slide... This grim fog-laden tale is so thick with atmosphere and tension that it had me on the edge of my seat all the way through.

Ford made 'The Informer' the same year he made the ... Read More:
