VHS : The Age Of Innocence [1993]
I am rating this movie three stars as the result of some complicated mathematics, of which the detail is as follows:

- basically, this is a ONE star movie. Why? Because in this movie virtually NOTHING happens! And this is a REEEAAAAALLLLYYYYY long one - 132 minutes is not a small thing to swallow, believe me, I know! Now, this kind of movie can be very dangerous. The first time I went to see it, I was with a date. Now, this date was to become later my fiance, then my bride, my life companion and ultimately the mother of my children. All of which almost didn't happen, because of this movie! Even now, after all this time, my wife reminds me "The Age of Innocence" disaster if she wants to put me down. So, be warned - this is a VERY ... Read More:

This film is about a disfunctional family consisting of rachel(cher) the mother, charlotte(Winona Ryder) the 15 year old daughter who seeing her mum go through dozens of boyfriends is attempting to lead a good christian life and little Kate(Christina Ricci) who has a talent in swimming, just like her father who her mum never caught the name of!
The family end up moving to a new state everytime rachel ends a relationship, which seems to be alot, we see them as they leave their home and head for boston. Once there we see them struggle to become more fuctional and settle down, its got a bit of everything in this film, but best of all is the way this film leaves you feeling, after all the ups and downs they really are just like everyone else.I should also mention how ... VHS : Bram Stoker's Dracula [1993]
I read Bram Stoker's Dracula and absolutely loved it, so after reading that Francis Ford Copella's version was the closest to the book, I felt I had to watch it.
If you are a fan of the book, I have to say: never, ever, ever watch this film. I find it hard to believe that anyone who has read Stoker's Dracula could find any redeeming features about this film. Every character is twisted and changed from those in the book.
Mina Harker is flirtatious and stupid, and falls in love with Dracula whilst having no concern for Jonathan whatsoever. Van Helsing actually seems mad, I think they tried to put some humour into the film by overexaggerating his character (this isn't a criticism of Anthony Hopkins, I think he's a brilliant actor, it's a criticism of the character he plays). ... VHS : The House Of The Spirits [1994]
First of all, I must admit that I've never read the book.

To be honest, I didn't even know that this film was an adaptation until I read the other reviews on Amazon. But whilst I can imagine the rolling landscapes and the charged emotions being sensuously described in a novel, a film cannot do this. And so whilst the occasional and seemingly random occurrences do eventually come together at the end, I spent the whole time waiting for something to happen, and then just breathed a sigh of relief when the whole thing was finally over.

As well as those few plot points that tied together of course, there were several blind alleys which (in my opinion) added absolutely nothing to the story. And so whilst the coup near the end of the film, Jeremy Iron's revelation that his ... Read More:

VHS : How To Make An American Quilt [1996]
This was just the type of film I love to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon with my feet up, a cup of hot chocolate, and packet of gypsy creams.
I enjoyed every bit of this film - the quilters' stories of their past loves and heartaches as they work on the quilt; student Finn's uncertainty about her own love life and the decision she finally made; and not least the glimpses of quilts in some background scenes. But what sacrilege to trail the beautiful wedding quilt in the dirt!
I will enjoy watching this film again and again.

VHS : Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael [1991]
Whatever happened to Winona Ryder? When you look at a film like this, her talent is so extremely obvious that you wonder how Hollywood could have let her fall through the cracks. This is a very simple film, but that's its appeal: it doesn't try to be clever. It takes its story of a teenager who's not just an outcast in her school but in her entire town and runs with it.

Although the film's title is "Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael", it's really about Dinky Bossetti, the aforementioned outcast. And it's not difficult to sympathise with Dinky: her adoptive mother wants a "perfect little girl", her classmates think she's a waste of space and the adults around her are petty and narrow-minded. But although Dinky is understandably guarded and averse to making an effort, Winona doesn't allow her character ... Read More:

In this modern version of Mr Deeds Goes to Town, Sandler plays Longfellow Deeds a simple pizzeria owner from Mandrake Falls who inherits forty billion dollars from an uncle he didn't even know he had. This is a great watch for anyone who wants a good laugh.
