VHS : Z / State Of Siege [1969/1972)
I have watched the film first in a film festival. If the festival showed this film only it would be enough. Later I have read the book also. The book is written by Greek writer Vasilius. The political environment is in Greece but same everywhere in the world. The left is always chased and harassed. The aggressors are organized illegally but receive police and government shelters. Those who try to investigate the events in an unprejudiced way are either bought or sacked or killed in the way. The film is a hit! All star cast deserves all the applause, also praise to Costa Gavras.

VHS : On A Clear Day You Can See Forever [1970]
This film was directed by the dame great director of "The Reluctant Debutante" and "Gigi" Vincente Minnelli Born: 28 February 1903, Died: 25 July 1986 (aged 83).

As with many films the story suffers a little form the lack of spontaneity of the Broadway version, yet it holds the essence and was not modified too much for the actors or media type. Some great songs arise from this play adapted to film.

Daisy Gamble (Barbra Streisand) seems extraordinary in such abilities as raising flowers that are unraisable and hearing telephones before they ring. However she needs to stop smoking and turns to hypnosis to help.

Dr. Marc Chabot (Yves Montand) in an attempt to help her discovers a whole new woman and falls ... Read More:

Pretty good as a film - but a bit po-faced. Watching it, you'd never guess that the original book is actually very funny.

4.Tout Va Bien [1972] starring: Yves Montand, Jane Fonda, Vittorio Caprioli, Elizabeth Chauvin, Castel Casti

VHS : Tout Va Bien [1972]
A film made during Gorin and Godard's most radical and arguably most creative and original periods. Made four years after '68, the spirit and ideals of the 'New Left' at the time are as strong as ever (in contrast to Eustache's 'La Mamam et la Putain').

Set in a salami factory where the workers have staged a wild cat strike, locking their boss in his office. Fonda and Montand stumble into this situation, which forces them to re-evaluate their work, lives and their relationship in political terms. The CGT try to break up the strike, the boss want to go for a wee - but thee workers wont let him, the communist party is selling books in the supermarket (next to the veg), the young Marxist start a fight and everyone starts helping themselves to the ... I first saw this magical film back in 1992. And some 12 years later... it is still one of the most wonderful films I've ever seen.
My only question is this: Why hasn't this film been re-mastered for a DVD release?
It is afterall Yves Montands last film and Jean-Jacques Beineix is one of the more internationally recognised French directors (Diva, 37.2 Le Matin).
A forgotten classic - but hopefully not forgotten for much longer.

VHS : Wages Of Fear [1952]
The Wages of Fear is a magnificent thriller, the last hour-and-a-half of which will have you chewing your nails up to your wrists. The first hour is interesting but, to my mind, a bit slow. We spend a lot of time getting to know the squalor of Las Piedras. The anti-American point of view now just seems quaint.

Las Piedras is a tiny South American (or possibly Central American) town that reeks of poverty and bakes in the hot sun. Children with sores, tired donkeys and mangy dogs fill the dirt streets. It's the final stop for down-and-outers whose only hope is to find work with the Southern Oil Company (you can infer SOC easily is a stand-in for Standard Oil), which dominates the place. "Americans here? You kidding?" says one man. "If there's oil around ... Read More:

VHS : Where The Hot Wind Blows [1961]
This was the film that Jules Dassin directed before regaining his popularity with such movies like Never On Sunday and Top Kapi,in the 60's.
This movie is about two couples who live in a Italian village. The first couple is about Gina Lollobrigida, as Marietta, who wants to marry enginneer Enrico, a rather poor guy, played by Marcello Mastoianni.
Yves Montand is playing Matteo, the crime boss of the little italian village, who wants Matietta for himself, and he is trying to get her.
The second couple is about the judge's wife,Donna Lucrezia, who is played by the beautiful Melina Mercouri, a woman trapped to a marriage with an older man. She falls in love with Matteo's son,Francesco, played by Raf Mattioli.
This a movie about passions under the hot Italian ... Read More:
