VHS : Curse Of The Werewolf (1960) [1961]
Produced when Hammer Films was at its height, this is a fine adaption of a novel about werewolves. This film also brought a very young Oliver Reed into the limelight. Overall, its a fine production with a good script. The sets may look a little amatuerish, but remember Hammer was known for its low budget successes during those years. Oliver Reed plays a young man who is cursed by turning into a werewolf during nights of the full moon. He can only be redeemed by the love of a young girl. The ending is brilliant to watch. If you are a die-hard Hammer fan you must buy this. And the price is good too. Picture and sound are good considering the film's age.

VHS : Devil Doll [1964]
DEVIL DOLL is a sleeper of a film in every sense. Bryant Haliday (THE PROJECTED MAN, TOWER OF EVIL) does rather well as The Great Vorelli, a stage hypnotist with a creepy ventriloquist act. He brings the sort of understated menace that Peter Cushing achieved so well in similar roles, and admittedly the scenes of the 'doll' getting up and walking about are very unsettling. Perhaps not on the same level of disquiet as Michael Redgrave's 'stage-partner', also called Hugo, in DEAD OF NIGHT, but certainly a close second. Unfortunately, the idea fails visually as we, the audience, just know that it is obviously a small real person 'walking' inside the dummy and not an inanimate object made to move. Perhaps they could have worked out some alternative ... Read More:

VHS : Double Trouble-Elvis Presley
No actually, it couldn't. A tired and bored looking Elvis, a cast that can't act it's way out of a paper bag and terrible sets. Oh yes, and the music is the pits(Long Legged Girls is acceptable - just).

Anything to recommend it - no. From the opening "groovy" credits it just goes downhill. The comedy script is unfunny, looking at them on a ferry to Belgium is just depressing - fog and all- and all the spy stuff is just crap. God, what was he thinking. A two year old could look at this script and bin it. Totally awful. Just depressing to watch if you're an Elvis fan and his leading lady is just dreadful - not even good to look at. There are a trio of "comedians" who were popular in the 40s or something who are trying ... Read More:
