VHS : The Double Life Of Veronique [1992]
One of Krzysztof Kieslowski's finest films is "The Double Life of Veronique" ("La Double vie de Véronique"). It's not just a philosophical, arty film, but a subtle and unique tale full of Kieslowski's directorial magic, and gives Irène Jacob a chance to shine in her most challenging role.

There are two women, the Polish Weronika and the French Veronique (both played by Irène Jacob). They have never met, never spoken, and do not know that the other exists. They share the same losses and the same health. Weronika is a singer, and Veronique is taking singing lessons. But their lives and souls are bound together, and their personalities are yin-yang opposites, one practical and one a stargazer.

The first time I watched this film I was slightly bored - couldn't understand what was being said or why. However, having watched it again recently I took each 'story' at face value and found myself thoroughly enjoying the beautiful camera work and actually making some sense of what the film was about and the various themes at play.

if you're not interested in watching films about the genesis of ideas, this is definitely not for you, but if you just want to sit back and watch a couple of hours of beautiful film making, I would reccomend it.

4.My Life So Far starring: Colin Firth, Rosemary Harris, Irène Jacob, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Malcolm McDowell

I have this (the Artificial Eye release). It's a bit thin and fuzzy and a little background research suggests that the R1 NTSC copy is a lot better, with stronger colour, contrast and detail (though Blue and White seem to be ok on both sides of the Pond). I suspect there'll be a remastered "trilogy" set from France (probably Mk2) sooner or later.

I used to watch this film many moons ago when i was younger, and ive since rediscovered it, only to find that this film is as good as, if not better than i remembered it! The setting is beautiful and the Yorkshire dales give the film a wonderful sense of mood too. The acting is brilliant. Maggie Smith is class all the way as Mrs Medlock, and John Lynch is a surprisingly good choice as Lord Craven. The children too are brilliant here - most notably Andrew Knott as Dickon, and there is an utterly charming romantic attraction theme between his character and that of Mary Lennox which runs through the film! <3
All in all, a wonderful film that is sweet and innocent, just like every childhood should be :)

VHS : U.S. Marshals [1998]
Structurally, U.S. Marshals, is a reworking of the The Fugitive, fulfilling the classic sequel brief of "the same but different": the producers substitute an incredibly impressive plane crash for the incredibly impressive train crash, a fall from a tall building for a fall from a dam and government defense secrets for drugs trials while throwing in the same plot device of an ally who turns out to be an enemy. The main difference here is no Harrison Ford, more Tommy Lee Jones and added Wesley Snipes (presumably on the run from the taxman) and Robert Downey Jr. (who really should have kept the sunglasses on until he finished rehab). There are no surprises, it's somewhat overlong and you won't remember it a day later, but it's energetically directed by Stuart Baird and superbly ... Read More:
