VHS : The Life of David Gale [2003]
I haven't seen this film in years - which I do appreciate might devalue my credibility as a reviewer. However, even having seen the film only once, I consider it one of the best films I have ever seen.

Artistically, the whole cast performed extremely well. As would be expected of actors such as Kevin Spacey, Laura Linney and Kate Winslet, the story was told in an understated and moving manner. However, it is the story itself which makes this a masterpiece. On the surface it was a crime-thriller tale, which didn't patronise or bore the viewer with a predictable outcome - a rarity itself in Hollywood. It's clear underlying intention was to highlight the flaws in America's Death Penalty punishment laws, and the message was powerful. ... Read More:

VHS : Bugsy Malone [1976]
I watched this film at various stages throughout my life and still have a soft spot for Bugsy Malone. Jodie Foster is and always has been one of my favourite actresses and this is the film I first saw her in. Remember when Babyface says 'get Babyface..I am Babyface' who incidentally is a British actor called Dexter Fletcher and has been in many television productions and films more famously in Lock Stock as Soap. The British actors seem to have done more with their lives than the American ones.....please correct me if I'm wrong. I wont mind...

This film is never outdated, should still be 'allowed' by the PC Brigade and no doubt be watched a few generations down the line. The actors were outstanding for their age and for the time and ... Read More:

Memory told me this was a dissappointment, many criticise Geldorf's performance - well what else was he supposed to do except act like a screwed up depressed individual, which I think he did well (no offence Bob - I'm backing you on this). I really enjoyed this film after a break of numerous years, some excellent moments visually and aurally, well packaged, and the soundtrack is to dream for - wonderful sound. I found this a satisfying disc and probably now prefer it to the CD. One gripe - the repackaging suggests that the Limited Edition disc is an improvement on the standard version, it isn't ! They seem to me exactly the same - but the packaging in the Limited Edition is much superior and just about justifies buying it.

This is one of the best true love stories you could ever see on film. It follows an Irish immigrant to America (Dennis Quaid) who gets involved a little to deeply in politics, and then tries to leave it all behind to live a normal life. He meets a Japanese girl called Lillie and they quickly fall in love. It's love at first sight for Jack and they run off to get married (her family does not approve)

The film then charts their young lives during a terrible period for all japanese families living in America, when Pearl Harbour was attacked!

Not to spoil what happens, but the lovers are separated and there is eventually a happy ending.

I love this film so much, I think Dennis Quaid is a brilliant leading man anyway but I ... Read More:

VHS : Mississippi Burning [1989]
Highly underrated movie that should have won oscars for everything from the direction to the screenplay to the cinematography, to the camera work, to the editing to the haunting and dramatic music score. This film has it all and it all comes off superbly well even if it is a little predictable in places.

This is also Gene Hackman at his stupendous best. A stunning performance that is arguably one of the best of all time--to be honest I like him here even more than I do Brando in the Godfather. He steals every single scene and he knows it, putting a riveting performance in its own right by Willem Defoe almost but not quite in the shade. Hackman's secret could well be that he never gives the impression that he's acting, but that this is for real. ... Read More:
