VHS : Sid And Nancy [1986]
As a minor fan of Punk, this is one of the most disappointing films I've seen. Gary Oldham gives a laughably bad portrayal of Sid Vicious nothing like the real thing at all and the leading lady was quite poor in her role as Nancy. Overall the biggest problem this movie suffers from is that it has the patina of a cheap amateur film student project.

I recently watched "The Filth and the Fury," a documentary about the Pistols and their antics, and I found this flick much less engaging. I've never understood Sid and Nancy's parasitic *need* for each other, and this movie did nothing to enlighten me.

The performances and music make this a marginal "recommend", but not by much. Another nail in the coffin of the British ... Read More:

VHS : The Winner [1998]
This was a film peopled by deeply shallow characters you didnt care about - except the lead Phillip - played by Vincent D'Onofrio, a nieve sort. There were no memorable lines, the music was OK and not too intrusive. The tension built but the ending was irritating.

There's no doubt that this film is worthy of cult status, and to many this is one of those all-time-classics. For me though, it's a good film, but doesn't quite hit the mark as a great film.

Some elements of the film are beautifully done; the generic packaging of food products, the bleak urban feel, and the seemingly apathy to violence and death make for a great dystopian atmosphere. This means that although the film is filmed/set in the 1980's, it has a futuristic look to it, almost like Mad Max.

The dystopia is developed further as the main characters have little or no ambition, whenever someone discusses what they want from life it's never anything more than committing crime or becoming a `fry chef' in a fast food ... Read More:

I think that with this, as with all of the Alex Cox films I have seen, it is an aquired taste. Some parts of this (and other Cox films) may just seem too tiedious or perhaps too stupid. But I really enjoyed this film, I thought it was really well filmed with intresting use of continuous shots and humour. Although seems quite aimless at times I felt that it was still entertaining as it was seemingly down to earth but yet with that usual Alex Cox underlying un-predictability and strangness. I juts loved the way the film flowed and how it wasn't so mainstream and seemed quite realistic, which is almost less of an Alex Cox style of film compared to 'Repo Man' or 'Straight to Hell'. Overall I thought it was a great film, with good performances (even from the director) ... Read More:

I got this movie because I tend to believe that Hollywood films are getting more and more cliché and predictable as time goes by, so if you want to find wicked independent movies you have to look to other countries, and what do you know I was right! I'd never heard of this film before watching it and have not heard about any of the actors or people involved in Highway Patrolman but I was pleasantly relieved to find a movie packed with atmosphere and that independent spirit lacking in big-budget flicks. There are quite a few plot holes in this movie and most of it would probably not be plausible in reality but having said that, the role of a Mexican Highway Patrolman is one that could only be from Mexico, complete with the reality we know to be true that they are all corrupt and just looking to make ... What can I say? Eccleston does a marvellous job (as he ALWAYS does) playing 3 parts in this thriller with a good twist at the end.
I'm pleased to have seen it and it's a pleasure to own although I probally wouldn't watch it for a while again, but it'll be nice to go through my extensive DVD collection and look at it in the distant future and see it again.
I recommend you watch this, not the highlight of Eccleston's career, but "Fantastic" none-the-less.
Keep up the good work Doctor!

This is the kind of film that you'll either love or hate; there's no in-between. It's a psuedo-spaghetti western that manages to pay homage to the genre while sending it up with obvious glee. Filmed on Sergio Leone's favourite set in Spain, it stars Sy Richardson (Samuel L must have seen his performance before appearing in "Pulp Fiction") as the leader of a trio of inept hitmen-come-bankrobbers, with his pregnant and extremely whiney girlfriend in tow. Add to the mix a family of schizophrenic, homicidal and coffee addicted Mexican style bandits played by the Pogues, Elvis Costello as their butler, Edward Tudor-Pole, Amazulu, Denis Hopper and Grace Jones in cameo roles and, most importantly, a highly memorable and rather impressive performance from Joe Strummer as one of the hitmen, and you have the ingredients ...
