Before the 1996 season, the British series was dying on it's feet, with rival series in place, little backing and few works teams. '96 was the year that it was rescued in no uncertain terms, with new series sponsors and (possibly most importantly) regular TV coverage by the BBC.

'96 was also the year the series gained it's own "superstar", with ex-Grand Prix rider Niall MacKenzie returning to the domestic scene.

This video gives a real feel for the thrills (and spills) in the first season of the British Superbike championship in it's current format - for fans of the domestic scene, it is a valuable record of the start of the build-up to becoming THE best domestic series in the world.

A great season is covered with all the thrills and spills of a championship where the grid contains over 20 cars! I love the way you can see before you, drivers fighting until the chequered flag is waved, going through everything from rolls and spectacular car control to some drivers showing what they really think about others on the grid who dare to take them off or even nudge them innocently.
