VHS : Look Up And Laugh [1935]
A typical lets save the world Gracie Fields movie which all her fans will enjoy. Perhaps not quite in the same league as Sing as we go but enjoyable all the same. A group of Market Stall holders call upon Gracie to help save the building from the clutches of a greedy business man. The plot for this film was borrowed by the writers of Passport to Pimlico a few years later.
Watch out for a brief glimspe of Kenneth More who was making his film debut and Vivien Leigh who later starred along side Clark Gable in Gone with the wind.

2.Sing As We Go [1934] starring: Gracie Fields, John Loder, Stanley Holloway, Dorothy Hyson, Frank Pettingell

VHS : Sing As We Go [1934]
Probably Gracies best and most loved film. Lovingly restored and although a little dated, still as entertaining as it was when first released some seventy plus years ago. Apart from the obvious Gracie Fields interest, it is also fascinating to see Blackpool in the 1930's - bursting at the seams with holidaymakers - and at it's absolute peak.
Great songs, great story line and a valuable piece of cinematic history. Watch out for a scene stealing early film role for Stanley Holloway. A must buy for any Brtish film fan.

3.The Laurence Olivier Collection--Hamlet, Henry V, That Hamilton Woman, 21 Days, The Boys from Brazil [1937] starring: Laurence Olivier, James Mason, Lilli Palmer, Denholm Elliott, Michael Gough
directed by: Laurence Olivier, Franklin J. Schaffner, Basil Dean, Alexander Korda

VHS : Twenty-One Days [1940]
Having seen That Hamilton Woman, in which Leigh and Olivier played doomed lovers, I anticipated this film to be of equal stature.

While both performances were good, it seemed to lack the lustre and luminance that their later performances together held.

There is no new ground to be found in this film and some scences are particularly obvious, such as the man under the lampost, the sole policeman with his whistle.

The plot is week and sluggish at times. Slow off the mark and often tiresome, this is not a film that either actors will be remembered for.

5.Lorna Doone [1935] starring: Victoria Hopper, John Loder, Margaret Lockwood, Roy Emerton, Mary Clare

VHS : Lorna Doone [1935]
The old B & W movie of Lorna Doone dating back to 1935 is the only one to use genuine Exmoor locations e.g where the book by R.D.Blackmore is set. More recent TV versions have been shot in Scotland and the Brecon Beacons. So if you want the real thing go for the 1935 version.

6.Looking On The Bright Side [1932] starring: Gracie Fields, Richard Dolman, Julian Rose, Wyn Richmond
directed by: Graham Cutts, Basil Dean

VHS : Looking On The Bright Side [1932]
Gracie's second film is a rags to riches tale with the title song being the hit of the film. Her leading man is a little 'wet' by today's standards, but the rest of the characters do a great job in depicting working class Britain of the early '30's.Great British production values with decent sets and a believable script. Miss Fields acts and sings in her usuall great style, I recommend this film for her old and new fans alike, great entertainment.
