VHS : The Black Sheep Of Whitehall [1942]
This film is a joy from begginning to end. The attepts to rescue a kidnapped scientist never fail to be funny. Will Hay's perfomance as the incompetent head of a correspondence college who gets drawn into the plot is wonderful and John Mills gives great support. This is a film that anybody can enjoy, the humour appeals to all age groups and despite the age of the film it never seems stale.

VHS : The Goose Steps Out [1942]
This is an absolute classic of wartime comedy. Will Hay, Charles Hawtery and Peter Ustinov all on great form. I would, under normal circumstances, give this film 5 out of 5 but I have just purchased a copy and found that two of the funniest scenes in the film have been cut from this print. The two scenes are the pronunciation of British towns (Slough, Cirencester etc) and the 'Invasion of Britain' scene on the train (Panzers down in the Severn Tunnel etc.). So my advice would be definitely see this film but save your money and wait for it to be shown on television.

VHS : Will Hay - My Learned Friend (1943)
In my opinion this is the best Will Hay due mainly to the superb plot.

Will Hay starts out in the film as an incompetent con-man who manages to amuse the judge and gets let off. He then gets caught up with a serial killer!

There are some great scenes where Will Hay and the hilarious nerd Claude Hulbert get caught up in the criminal underworld. They are completely out-of-their-depth, but as always we are on their side and their naivety somehow pulls them through.

A very funny and very clever film.

A British caper - one of those archetypal "Sunday afternoon" films full of familiar faces and not an ounce of fat on the plot. Ex-British Army officers in various states of "digrace" team up to rob a bank and that's it - it's all in the details. This DVD looks terrific, with crisp, anamorphic black and white. If only all the great British movies of the period were getting this treatment!

VHS : The Bells Go Down [1943]
I first watched this film many years ago,and enjoyed it very much, which is why I bought the video, but I had forgotten just how much the spectacular scenes of the burning buildings, and the dangers of fighting multiple fires during the Blitz could make you feel that you were there with them.James Mason,Finlay Currie, and Tommy Trinder take the main parts in the story, with sub-plots concerning the other characters, with Mervyn Johns, perfect as the local spiv and William Hartnell(Dr Who)sharing his knowledge with his colleagues of the bombing in the Spanish Civil War.It can be a bit wearing with the constant wisecracking of Tommy Trinder in the beginning, but as the film progresses he changes into the perfect fire fighter, much to James Mason(his team ... This film was the acorn from which sprang the oak of Dixon of Dock Green, the longrunning TV series featuring Sergeant Dixon, amiably wise local uniformed policeman, who always started and ended each episode with a homespun homily. My grandmother never missed. In the film, Dirk Bogarde's young gangster shoots dead the then Police Constable Dixon and is pursued relentlessly but with almost amusing gentility by the Metropolitan Police, who, naturally, capture him in the end. The film is skilfully made and the raffish atmosphere of postwar London brilliantly shown. Ground and aerial shots of the main areas used (Little Venice, Maida Vale, Paddington, North Kensington) are of interest not only to the film buff but to social and architectural historians. ... Typical stiff upper-lipped 'fifties melodrama.

The action sequences of the Fairmile at sea are remarkable and unique. --mainly becuse the used the genuine article--a Fairmile D....--no CGI's and fake water here! and therefor unlikely evert to be re-made or repeated--due to lack of seaworthy Fairmile motorgun-boats in this present day!

The acting is a little wooden in places but the moral point of the movie is brought to bear in an effective manner-crime does not pay...

VHS : Train Of Events [1949]
This good old British film starts with an horrific train crash, which looks remarkably realistic, although obviously they used OO-Gauge rather than the real thing - but then we all accepted that in those days.
Then, without giving away the outcome, it cleverly takes the action back three days to show the events that led to the main characters being on that train. ('Train of Events' - get it?) There are four story lines, those of the engine driver, a young couple who are desparate to make a new life for themselves, an actor with something rather nasty in his luggage, and a philandering musician who (on the instructions of his wife) is trying to shake off an amorous concert pianist.
As their stories are told we are treated to a clever mix of comedy, ... Read More:
