VHS : Rich Man Poor Man
The first ever television mini-series was broadcast as 12 x 50 minute episodes in the U.K., either side of 'News At Ten' on three consecutive Wednesday and Friday nights throughout July, in that summer, of 1976. It was ITV's answer to the BBC's coverage of the Olympics at the time-and what an answer!

The story of Rudy & Tom Jordache...two brothers who battled through their conflicting lifestyles in two different ways. Based on the best-selling novel by Irwin Shaw, we are taken on a roller-coaster ride starting in Port Philip, New York in 1945 through to the French Riviera in the mid-60's. A classic tale of Rags to Riches and Happiness to Heartbreak.

Messrs. Strauss and Nolte are awesome as the brothers with the fine ... Read More:

This fast-moving Roman epic is difficult to get because it was first titled "Masada" and was run as a series in U.S.A. The Roman legionaries LOOK like Roman legionaries; props are well-researched; the location is right and the catapults LOOK like they actually would have been. Moreover, O'Toole plays a convincing role as aging commander of a disenchanted legion, an ethical and reasonable man fed-up with ongoing pointless slaughter, as opposed to the officious Imperial busy-body sent from Rome to hurry things up at whatever cost to human life and dignity. His 'antagonist' (the Jewish leader of the insurgents) is equally convincing and desperate to do the right thing, but ... Read More:

VHS : The Omega Man [1972]
A 1970's film, this one, so the soundtrack, lingo and fashion dates it a little, but besides that it can be from any time. This is one of the many Sci-fi movies from the days when the genre was actually used as a medium to explore interesting ideas, not just pretend to or just outline them like it seems to be nowadays. A sanctioned rewrite of 'I am Legend' by the Corringtons, it changes quite a few things but leaves you with a pretty good experience.

Charlton Heston is in the lead role once again (two other notable films from around this time, 'Soylent Green' and 'Planet of the Apes', have this actor in common), as the lone(?) survivor of a virus that either kills outright or reduces the afflicted to a 'zombie-like state' (although ... Elvis movies. They're that strange breed of film that however poor the finished product, they still have the potential to be enjoyable. Most of the films that Elvis made are poorly acted and scripted, and if judged by most benchmarks that film buffs use to evaluate movies, can easily be ripped apart and dismissed as cheaply made garbage. This is exacerbated by the fact that in the sixties, Elvis was working flat out churning out these musicals for the big screen faster than a chicken lays eggs.

Despite this though, there is a small group of films that Elvis made that are hugely enjoyable, more than the sum of their parts if you like, and this is one of them. I rate this as a 5 star effort, my favourite of the King's movies, and one slight ... Read More:

Bought this film with 633 Sqn a few days a go. After watching both of them I now know why I always confused the two films. I watched 633 Sqn first followed by Mosquito Squadron and while both films are good in their own right, I have one major problem with this one. It is not only a virtual re-make with the plot being so very close in many places, but it also uses loads of film footage from 633 Sqn.

That aside I would recommend it to anyone who likes war films.
