I found this film a hidden gem marvelous acting and a great story. One of those films that builds up to a great emotional crescendo at the end in the same way that Once Upon a time in the west does. should be watched with no interuptions. One of the best films I have ever seen. But you have to have lived to appreciate it.

These films are the original 5 films that the series was based upon. The stories and effects of each are up to the usual Renaissance Pictures standard (apart from the last one which is a bit of a clip show). The first and last are the only ones which Iolaus features (played by the excellent Michael Hurst). Other points of interest (to Xena fans) are that Renee O'Conner appears as Deianeira in The Lost Kingdom.

This series is just as enjoyable to watch as it was in the 70s. You can certainly watch it more than once and probably get pleasure from it time after time. There are lots of good actors, including the young man who provided the lead role in Kes. Let's hope the other two series will be released soon. The storylines are very interesting and evocative - in short I couldn't fault it.

I can vividly remember the panic of Sunday evenings - bath, hairwash, school uniform laid out by 7.15pm or suffer the wrath of Mum. If she missed a second of this series the consequences were dire. As I watched this DVD I remembered most of the plot, even though I was definitely too young to watch it back in the day. I think I was actually remembering Mum's reactions to the plot and my view of the characters was certainly coloured by her opinion - initially. Am the only viewer who actually likes Soames? In the novels, after all, he is the main protagonist; not 'Young' (Kenneth More!) Jolyon. I felt that Irene was a cold, manipulative harridan. There is never any excuse for rape, of course, and I share the horror of the British public ... Read More:
