VHS : The Philadelphia Story [1941]
Tracy Lords is getting married again. This time to a man who worked his way to the top instead of starting there. Dexter her first husband invites himself to the wedding and the wedding preparations. Also inviting their selves with a little blackmail to the wedding is a writer, and photographer, from a magazine of dubious reputation. Throw in a philandering father and a friendly uncle. We watch as they go through the motions and emotions of courting and re-evaluating their lives.
This is basically a comedy and yes it has all the actors and writers to make this a piece of cinematic art. However you will find it is just fun to watch.

The title says it all, I think and the reviewer who considers it classist and misogynist has obviously failed to see the point of the movie which actually makes fun of these attitudes. Remember the scene at Mrs. Higgin's house or Alfred P. Doolite's remarks on 'middle-class morality' - hardly narrow-minded.

4.David Copperfield [1934] starring: W.C. Fields, Lionel Barrymore, Maureen O'Sullivan, Madge Evans, Edna May Oliver

VHS : David Copperfield [1934]
Released in 1935, George Cukor's adaption of what Dicken's claimed was his favourite of his novels is an absolute gem. Cukor has assembled a wonderful cast to tell the story of David from his chilhood to manhood and the sometimes harrowing adventures he has on the way. There are many unforgettable charectarisations most notably W.C. Fields as Micawber, Edna May Oliver's Aunt Bessie, Roland Young as the sceming Uriah Heep and Basil Rathbone as the downright unpleasant Mr Murdstone. Freddie Bartholomew as the boy David is actually far more effective than Frank Lawton's portrayl of the man David who is rather bland in the role but that is certainly not enough to spoil the film. A huge box office hit in it's day the film was produced by David Selznick (and was nominated for ... Read More:

VHS : Born Yesterday [1950]
Hardly the best of Cukor's films although is often considered so. Judy Holliday is Broderick Crawford's girlfriend. He is a gangster aiming to greater deals with some politicians and he decide that she should improve herself with William Holden's help. He's a reporter, who soon decide to prive into the gangster's businesses.

Judy Holliday won an Oscar for her role here, beating Bette Davis, Anne Baxter (both for All About Eve) and Gloria Swanson (Sunset Blvd.) in one of the most unfair winnings I can remember - any of the other 3 should have won. Still, the film is enjoyable, with William Holden as the leading man, giving his part a more dubious shadow than other actors might have. But to me the true star of the film is Broderick Crawford as Holliday's gangster lover.

VHS : A Bill Of Divorcement [1932]

This is a sentimental story - some may say 'overly' so, but there are some wonderfully moving scenes within this picture that are simply too good to miss!

Billie Burke gives probably her greatest performance in this as 'Meg', who, whilst celebrating Christmas and her engagement to another man, her ex-husband 'crashes' his way back into her life as if nothing has happened, having come to his senses, and spending years in an Asylum.

There is one particularly heart-rending scene in this between she (Meg) and her ex-husband (John Barrymore) when he begs her to take him back as if he's never been away. This is made more torturous - not so much by the script, as by Burke's outstanding performance.
