VHS : The Time Machine [2002]
This was on TV last night, and I nearly didn't watch it, due to the mixed reviews it has received. In the end, I thought I might as well, and am actually quite glad I did. Yes, the reason why the time machine gets created is clichéd and really quite unnecessary, and the story does move away from Well's novel, but I didn't really mind, to be honest, as the idea of the old world order coming to an end, due to the moon's demise, is actually quite interesting. The acting is sound across the board, with Guy Pierce and Jeremy Iron's, in a cameo on this occasion, on good form. The real star of the show is, of course, the Time Machine itself, and it's well realized, capturing the spirit of the nineteen century, with all it's brass instruments, cog wheels, and ... What more could any movie want?? Julia Roberts, with massive amounts of sex appeal and the best smile in the world. Brad Pitt, something for the ladies and a fantastic actor and with an amazing chemistry with Roberts. James Gandolfini and Gene Hackman, top of an excellent cast.

The flim is a non-stop ride twisting and turning its way around an old legend surrounding an antique pistol. This film could actually last for another hour and you would still be absorbed in its mixture of love, betrayal, action and incompetence.

VHS : The Ring [2003]
Having seen Ring (the original Japanese version) I can honestly say this is a poor man's remake - gone really is the rawness that the original Ring portrays. The Ring never really lives up to expectations and does not keep you on the edge - mere boredom set in after only 30 minutes. Maybe I was expecting more from this but I'd see this as being a little off centre and certainly anyone wanting to get joy from the Ring, try the Japanese original - far more enjoyment for your pound and I think the Jap's eye this as being a poor remake.
