VHS : Hope And Glory [1987]
One of the best film on WWII in London... and surprisingly enough not available in the UK (and not even in European format).
I first saw the film about 15 years ago and have now bought it for my daughter (it fits perfectly with the year 3 curriculum) and of course for me. I think we've watched it about 10 times over the last 6 months.
Moving and fun, don't hesitate to buy it.

John Boorman's 1981 film is an exercise in how to treat fantasy in an adult and serious manner.
The fantasy elements are subtle - there are no stop motion monsters to be found here - and yet still pervade the movie with a sense of the magical & arcane. This film in no way attempts a realistic approach to the extent of 2004's King Arthur.
Merlin as portrayed here is dark & ambiguous, constantly aware of the end of the time of magic & the old gods. A very eccentic performance by the
excellent Nicol Williamson. Helen Mirren as the evil & seductive sorceress, Morgana gives an erotically charged performance that is not easily forgotten!
Nigel Terry as Arthur is a bit wooden BUT his tone & manner suits the ... Read More:

VHS : Point Blank [1967]
When his buddy, Mal Reese, with his wife, Lynne, looking on, puts two bullets into Walker right after they've high-jacked a big haul on Alcatraz island, Walker gets mad...and then gets even. Walker somehow survives those gunshots and a year later he returns. For the next hour and a half, Walker (Lee Marvin) is going to say once if he says it ten times, "I want my money back." The Organization is not about to accommodate Walker, even if Walker's money is only a measly $93,000. That includes Reese, who now has Walker's wife and who has become one of the Organization's top men, all of whom look like business CEOs. While Walker relentlessly goes after his money and works his way up the corporate criminal ladder, he leaves a trail of corpses behind. Walker ... Read More:

VHS : Beyond Rangoon [1995]
Based on actual events, this film is a quietly moving portrait of a young woman numb with grief and a country fighting for democracy. The film works on both levels due to the deft direction of John Boorman, an understated performance from Patricia Arquette, and a wonderful score by Hans Zimmer that sets the mood for the entire film.

The film opens as Arquette and her sister, nicely played by Frances McDormand, are taking a tour down a beautifully scenic river in Burma. We learn immediately that Arquette has been brought there by her sister to forget, something she has been unable to do. We see in flashback Arquette walking in on her husband and young son, murdered during a robbery. It is something that has left her numb to everything and Patricia ... Read More:

VHS : The Tailor Of Panama [2001]
I've watched and enjoyed "The Taylor of Panama" several times now. It seems to represent co-producer John Le Carré's homage to Graham Greene, Ian Fleming, and a spoof on the spy genre-film in general (It even includes a humorous pot-shot at "Casablanca.").

Geoffrey Rush turns in a moving performance as Harry Pendel, the tailor, whose fantasy life makes him all too vulnerable for the enticements and blackmail of the seedy would-be, but never-actually-was, James Bond--Andrew Osnard, a burnt-out MI-Sixer, banished to Panama as a punishment for peccadilloes in foreign postings [Pierce Brosnan does an engaging satire on his cinematic Bond aplomb.]. Between the fantasies of Pendel (whose dead but not-so-silent partner is portrayed by Harold Pinter) the ... Read More:

DVD owners be warned: this remains the superior version of the film. The US and UK DVDs are identical (as is the one in the Exorcist Trilogy box set) and contain the inferior longer version of the film which got a critical slamming in the US. The music is also weaker on the DVD than VHS (being remixed to its detriment and missing some tracks altogether). This VHS is a superior cut to the original UK VHS and (from what I recall) the theatrical version. Obviously the DVd has better picture quality, but the scenes that have been left in the DVD and the music that has been cut out diminish the film enormously. Consequently, this VHS is the way to go for lovers of this 'much maligned by the masses but recognised as genius by the few' film. See my review of the UK DVD for more information.

I wasn't expecting much of this film, but in my opinion I thought it was really well-put together. There is excellent scenery and a decent plot about four friends who go camping along the river, and get attacked along the way. Enjoyable to watch and a superb ending. I would buy this film as you grow to like it and it doesn't get tedious. This is a film with twists and sometimes has suspense. It surprised me, I really took a liking to this film. A thriller to be enjoyed.
