VHS : Damage [1993]
[BEWARE SPOILERS]

I don't know whether I've ever watched a film in which I identified more with all the characters than I did in this emotionally wrenching masterwork from the late, great Louis Malle. It is part of the genius of Malle to, like Shakespeare, make every character real and to see and present the depth of even those slightly off stage.

I could begin with the youngest, the daughter Sally (Gemma Clarke) who says little and is always at a slight distance, her serious face in the backseat of the car seemingly thinking dark thoughts, her face down the hallway at night, seemingly knowing that her father has committed adultery with her brother's fiancée--yet not knowing. Louis Malle wanted a certain expression ... Read More:

Never has the topic of incest been so sensitively portrayed. There is nothing indulgent, sensationalist or judgmental about it- in fact it is secondary to the real story, that of an adolescent boy's first adult experiences and his family life. If you like 'plot' this film will probably disappoint you, much more like life it has ups and downs and little chapters, rich characters and a few laughs, but no recurrent theme (other than the Charlie Parker soundtrack). Louis Malle's subtlety is masterful; it is a film full of quiet observation and with no overriding message to beat you with.

I first saw this film when I was very ill and confined to bed for several weeks - I'm sure it helped my convalescence! Inspiring, amazing, even astounding film that set me on the path to discovering the genius of director Louis Malle. Unfortunately, the only dvd edition I know of is a very poor transfer of a grainy, faded print. This film deserves restoration and recognition for the masterpiece it is.

VHS : Zazie Dans Le Metro [1959]
A completely surreal and hillarious film by Louis Malle. Those who have read the original book will love the film adaptation. Zazie, a little French girl, visiting Paris and staying with her uncle (Ton-Ton) dreams of doing only one thing: Riding the Paris Metro. But as luck has it, the Metro is on strike and instead Zazie finds herself in the mad day and night life of 1960s Paris. She meets all sorts of crazy adults that go through adult problems, like bi-sexuality, love, loss of youth and beauty, even perversion and greed...all these characters she either loves, hates or simply drives them crazy in poignant way that only a child can get away with. Highly recommended!

I had to watch this film for my 1st year History course at University to see whether films can acurately represent the past. Even though this film is very accurate it is also RUBBISH! I have never been so bored in my life and couldnt wait to get out of the lecture theatre. I wasn't the only one by far. My essay on this module is due in 5 weeks time and I'm dreading the fact that I may need to actually watch this again.

It seems astonishing that this moving and beautifully crafted film is not available in the UK. However, I have managed to order the DVD of it from Amazon France. Doubtless no subtitles, but many can manage without, I'm sure.

VHS : Les Amants [1958]
A young Jeanne Moreau is wonderful as a bored and neglected wife being transformed from a superficial social butterfly into a woman willing to sacrifice all for love. In some ways the story is unbelievable but the force of her central performance is so convincing that it carries the film.
