VHS : Casablanca [1942]
This used to be my favourite. I went to see it at a cinema in the 70s, when it was distinctly arthouse. Times change, though. Now the racism grates too much. When it was made I'm sure it was meant to be radical. Rick saying he does not sell human beings when offered a price for Sam might have been cutting edge in '42. Not now.

It does not matter how captivating Ms Bergman is, I cannot see past her using that American racist insult, 'boy'.

Sam, of course, does not even have two dimensions to his character.

This is the best film ever but try as I might I can not get hold of it for region 2. If anyone knows where or how I can find this film to play on my DVD player, here in England, I would be grateful.
Same goes for "My Beautiful Son" AKA "Strange Relations" in the American market.

VHS : Dodge City [1939]
Dodge City doesn't hold up as well as other Errol Flynn classics, partially because the film seems to be trying a little too hard to throw everything into the mix, with the through line of the story suffering as a consequence. In many ways it's really just a B-movie with A-movie production values, glorious Technicolor (albeit somewhat inconsistent in the new DVD due to the mastering problems with the old three-strip system elements) and a great supporting cast, and never quite catches fire the way it should despite being more than entertaining enough.

Still, the Region 1 NTSC DVD does include among its plentiful extras the superb Tex Avery cartoon The Shooting of Dan McFoo, so I didn't feel shortchanged. Also included is the original trailer built ... Read More:

Joan crawford was perfectly cast in this film noir classic. She sets the screen on fire, such sincerity in her portrayal. A truly evil daughter played by Ann Blythe is her match. Buy it. The documentary on the reverse side of this double sided DVD is very good too.

At 27 years of age, my husband bought this for me for Christmas, as I love this time of year and happy festive films. This is the first time I have ever seen White Christmas and I loved it! VHS : Sea Hawk [1940]
"With England conquered, nothing can stand in our way. Northern Africa... Europe as far east as the Urals... then the New World: to the north, to the south, west to the Pacific..." No, that's not Hitler speaking to his generals. The year is 1585 and that's Phillip II speaking to his admirals. Phillip is busy building his armada so he can conquer England, while Elizabeth dithers indecisively. She doesn't want to start a war with Spain, but she doesn't mind capturing a bit of Spanish treasure if the action can't be traced back to her. She relies on the Sea Hawks, English privateers who go after Spanish ships to capture Spanish riches for Elizabeth...and for themselves. It's also 1940 and Warner Brothers wanted this film to demonstrate to American audiences how brave the British are ... Read More:

VHS : Captain Blood [1935]
Captain Blood is one of those films I always undervalue, which at least means that each time I see it I'm pleasantly surprised by how much better it is than I remembered. Despite the lack of action until the spectacular finale, it has a good plot and some great visuals, as you'd expect from Michael Curtiz, but a big part of the fun is watching Errol Flynn become a star before your eyes: it's easy to guess which scenes were shot during the first couple of weeks when he was still a little awkward, but the confidence, charm and vigour he brings to the part easily overshadows his few missteps, and he and Olivia De Havilland are one of those rare perfect onscreen couples. Basil Rathbone's Fronch axe-scent is so out-ray-juss that even he can't keep a straight face (he literally has to turn ... Read More:
