VHS : The Onedin Line - Part 1 [1971]
This is a must have for anyone interested in the golden age of BBC television with an unparalleled cast and supporting company. Although it suffers somewhat from editing that distorts character subleties by the necessary truncation of the series, it retains the flavour of the original with accurate historical detail enmeshed into story lines. The first few episodes support strong performances from all of the cast and a chance to savour the joys of much location filming at sea that was sadly lacking by later series. VHS : Testament Of Youth [1979]
The main reason why I took to this 1979 BBC Drama Series was its emontional power. Cheryl Campbell is excellent, and flawless as Vera Brittain, and hardly puts a foot wrong. Watching this series again has made me realise how much of an impact it has made. It makes you feel that you're sharing the journey of life with her. This programme is also relevant to the Iraq war, and to those who have lost loved ones in subsequent wars that followed after the First World War. This programme should also serve as a warning ... VHS : Joanna Trollope's A Village Affair [1995]
This story is an adaptation of Joanna Trollope, whom I am told is the queen bee of the "Aga sagas", romantic-sexual novels set in places like Gloucestershire. I suppose this kind of setting appeals to a kind of Daily Mail female readership or audience. I have to say I found none of the characters particularly likeable or even interesting. The plot is basic: married couple with young children go to live in what would be described by the aforesaid newspaper as "idyllic" village-rural quarters in an old detached house with garden, nice village nearby etc. Husband tries to seduce posh neighbour's (black tie dinner at home...) daughter (turns out she's Lesbian anyway); some other character tries to seduce the wife of the couple. Both unsuccessful. Lesbian ... Read More:
