VHS : Capricorn One [1976]
A fantastic plot, even allowing for the downright silly concepts of time and size. Or maybe NASA had had a budget cut?
Only kidding, but that's really what the film is about - 'What if there had been one screw-up too many'.
The plot is great, the scripting great, but....
It's the ending. It looks like the idea was rushed, bolted on due to lack of ideas or time, or replaces something else - a little like the ending from the theatrical release of Bladerunner, you know?
Ok, so Gould and Brolin race across the graves at Arlington (assuming that's where they are), and drop to slow-mo, as the press, the mourners, and the President to to look, not in slow-mo.
So, did Hyams run out of ideas, plot, money, or what? He gets ... Read More:

VHS : Timecop [1995]
First, to get the things straight, I am the first to recognise tha JC Van Damme is not really an actor and his movies are usually nothing more that settings for some martial arts displays. But "Timecop" is the exception to the rule. This is a quite smart story about a very special police force, which fights against the abuse of time travelling. Timecops search fugitives who escaped in the past (there is no travels into the future), bandits, who go to the past to loot and plunder using modern weaponry, crooks, who try to make fortune using knowledge of future events, finally terrorists, who try to influence the future by changing the past. The whole concept is vaguely inspired by SF novel by Paul Anderson, "Time Patrol". JC Van Damme plays one of the Timecops, ... Read More:

VHS : Hanover Street [1975]
One of the delights of DVD - even more than video - is that its insatiable desire for fresh product sees the resurrection of swathes of unloved would-be blockbusters that no self-respecting cinematheque would ever include in any retrospective and which would otherwise be left to rot in time-compressed panned-and-scanned graveyard slots on network TV just before the infomercials start. These aren't the forgotten or under-appreciated masterpieces awaiting rediscovery, but rather the misjudged, the misbegotten or the just plain mistimed, films before or after their time that never found their audience and, until the advent of DVD, would never have been given the chance.

Hanover Street fits into all those categories at once. Intended both as a throwback ... Read More:

VHS : Outland [1981]
As many previous reviewers have said this is a remake of High Noon the classic western from the 1950's. So if you know the plot to that film you'll know the plot to this. The excellent Sean Connery is a Marshall sent to Io, one of Jupiters moons, which has a mining colony. He realises that too many workers are dying in odd circumstances and decides to find out why.

The main reasons to watch this are Connery, and the superb Frances Sternhagen as a colony medical advisor. Both give compelling performances, which compensate for the sometimes average script.

In an era when numerous classic Sci-fi and Horror films were released (Alien, American Werewolf in London and Escape from New York to name a few) this film tends to be forgotten, maybe because ... Read More:

VHS : Sudden Death [1996]
Jean Claude Van Damme plays a fireman who's lost his nerve as well as the respect of his young son. But that's soon about to change when terrorists take over an ice hockey stadium and the Vice President's box. On hand is Van Damme who is determined to save his family and foil the terrorists' plans, which include blowing up the stadium during the match.

Van Damme is likeable as always and Powers Boothe lends some charisma as the chief villian. He's no Alan Rickman, but his presence definately aids the movie. But the aspect that really raises this effort is the action. It's virtually non-stop and nicely varied, despite being in one location. Whether he's fighting a giant penguin (it'll make sense when you see it!), swinging from the rafters or even taking part in the hockey ... Read More:

VHS : End of Days [1999]
End of days is a film that has had alot of criticism thrown at it and clearly some of it has stuck,it isnt a perfect film, there are flaws and holes in the storyline and the odd trick doesnt work but in terms of being dark and sinister this film has it nailed on.
Arnie pops up as a beaten down drunk who has lost his faith and much more besides, gabe byrne plays the devil who needs to concieve the spawn of satan and unlock the gates of hell, both forces are sure to meet.
The film has some good ideas, while not always realised there is plenty to admire, the violence is good and the pace of the film is lively enough, there is room for sentiment also as arnie has his flaws and is far from a 'terminator' here,as another reviewer stated this compares to other films and betters the odd one in comparison, worth ... VHS : Narrow Margin [1990]
Narrow Margin is one of those small time films which gives so much more than it's more well publicised and better known stable mates, but yet because of silly issues doesn't quite fulfil its true potential.

The story idea is thrilling just in itself. Witness to a mob murder, Carol Honnicut played by Anne Archer is forced to flee for her life before she can possibly testify. She is tracked down by grizzled deputy D.A. Robert Caufield (Gene Hackman), but at the same time because of a mystery mole in the D.A.'s office the mob and various henchmen are also on the trail of Ms Honnicut. Forced to take refuge on a passing train travelling through the Canadian Rockies, the question is will the pursuing bad guys find Caufield and Honnicut before these two make it to safety.

Hackman is great in this sort ... Read More:
