VHS : Doctor Who - The Five Doctors / The King's Demons - Box Set [1983]
'The Five Doctors' has since been released on dvd (twice) so I will restrict this review to the two part story 'The King's Demons'. This was not meant to be the last story of the 20th season, but ended up being so due to a strike that resulted in a Dalek story being cancelled. As such, it is hardly the bang that a season should end with, simply showing the Master meddling around with history. At two parts at least it does not outstay it's welcome. It is surprising that JNT ever allowed Kamelion to come aboard the TARDIS as a new companion, seeing that he did not like K9. Regular viewers would have had no problem identifying the story's villain the moment he appears in 'disguise'. That aside, this is a watchable enough tale, though no classic.

VHS : Doctor Who - The Twin Dilemma
After getting a copy of this and The Caves Of Androzani I persuaded my best mate to sit down and watch the two back-to-back to go through the classic best-and-worst back-to-back Doctor Who experience. Having watched the excellent Caves Of Androzani many times and rated it as highly as it's reputation suggests I was interested to see if The Twin Dilemma lived up to it's fan ranking of worst ever serial. It was much worse than I expected. My mate was glued to Caves, but was clearly having difficulty staying awake during Twin Dilemma. He spent most of his time reading the Caves Of Androzani sleeve notes or trying to get comfortable on the sofa. I had a headache and nasty pain behind my eyes. Firstly the good bits: By far the best thing about the ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - The Five Doctors [1983]
This episode is one of those rare occasions where the then current doctor meets his previous selves. This time its Peter Davison(the 5th doctor)meeting with his other selves.Sadly William Hartnell (the 1st doctor)had passed away by the time this was made,so another actor takes his place. He is no Hartnell, but is adequate .Patrick Troughton(the 2nd doctor)and Jon pertwee reprise their roles with aplomb. The Brigadier puts in an appearance and is his usual self.Unfortunately Tom Baker-the 4th,and best doctor-is only in it for 2 minutes, and doesnt get to meet any of his alter egos.He would have made this episode even better. There is very little plot here, but there are some great scenes involving the daleks, the cybermen, the master and of course, the 5 doctors.

Stunning, startling and superb.
I recommend this story very highly. Season 20 was brilliant and this story kicks off the Guardian trilogy, it is followed up by Terminus (a hugeky underrated story!) and the brilliant, spellbinding Enlightenment. This is a gem and well worth a look!

VHS : Doctor Who - Planet Of Fire [1984]
With over 150 stories broadcast, opinion is often divided as to which are the best and worst Doctor Who stories. Ofcourse the usual level of consensus, will see Caves of Androzani, somewhere near the top, and Timelash,Time Flight, and Time And The Rani, at the opposite end. But then in the middle you get stories such as Seeds of Death, Ambassadors of Death, and The Planet of Fire, which people seem to give less attention too, they are simply seen as ok. I think Planet of Fire perhaps deserves a little more recognition. In the documentary accompanying The Leisure Hive, reference is made to the producer John Nathan Turner favouring style over storyline, certainly in Planet of Fire, the fantastic location of Lanzorate, does help distract from a rather weak storyline. ... Always being a fan of when one reincarnation of the Doctor meets another, and being a fan of Colin Baker, I found this particular episode too tempting to miss. The story opens with Patrick Troughton and companion Jamie reasoning with a professor calling himself Distari - a man hell-bent on cracking the secrets of time travel for himself. There is a raid by persons unknown and the last thing Jamie sees is the Doctor being tortured to death in a giant container.

As this happens, the Doctor (Colin Baker) suddenly collapses in the Tardis, feeling himself weaken. The Doctor and Peri must find out what is happening before it is too late for the Doctor(s).

Set in a variety of locations ranging from a space station to Spain (believe it or not), this ... Read More:

VHS : All Creatures Great and Small - series 4 - volume 2 - the bull with the bowler hat/the pig man cometh
I first encountered Christopher Timothy (or 'Christ Time' as I came to know him) while on a caving holiday in Yorkshire in the early 80s. We were assigned to the same team, and he was as knowledgeable and confident as I was green and terrified. He took me by the hand, and guided me expertly into the deep, dark, unseen crevices - it was quite an adventure, and we've remained firm friends ever since.

He obviously took me into his confidence, and he confessed to me he was planning some special horror editions of 'All Creatures...' - immediately, I was almost intrigued. He told me he'd developed some scripts that were quite a way off of James Herriot's source material - the first one was about a bull with a skill for finance that attempts to buy up the entire village ...
