VHS : Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World [2003]
I only just caught up with this film on TV in 2008, and I LOVED it. There are not many films that can keep you gripped for two and a half hours with not a second of boredom (think Zhivago, the Godfather films and Lawrence), but this has to be added to the list. How on earth did this not get best picture instead of the cliched and awful Mystic River? I will certainly be buying the most comprehensive DVD version I can find so that I can rewatch it many times. And by the way, I'm a 45-year-old woman and I watched it on my own, dog tired, at midnight - and it was over far too soon. Great central performance from Russell Crowe, who actually looks tough enough for the job, unlike most Hollywood wimps.

VHS : Picnic At Hanging Rock [1976]
As other contributors have pointed out, the landscapes, characterisation, atmosphere of mystery and the haunting music make this one of the greatest movies of all time.

All I want to say is, if anyone discovers a commercial DVD source with the complete version on it, please will they put it up on this site. I have an old VHS tape with the full version, which I have transferred to disc, but obviously the quality has deteriorated over the years.

If Peter Weir ever reads this, please change your mind! Your first edit was pure genius.

VHS : The Mosquito Coast [1986]
at the start i only bought this film because of a still growing obsession with river phoenix. after watching it though it has become one of my favourite harrison ford films. we're all so used to seeing him play a righteous hero who everyone loves however in mosquito coast you cannot decide whether to love him for his ambition, or hate him for being a completely selfish, uncaring husband and father who is willing to let his childern leave him in order to live his dream. A powerful gripping film with incredible realism from the main actors. fantastic.

VHS : Green Card [1996]
This amusing romantic comedy stars the beautiful and talented Audie MacDowell who plays Bronte, a botanist and gardner, and the charming teddy-bear like Gerard Depardieu, who is a music composer but moonlights as a waiter until he hits the big time. Each with their own agenda, agree to a marriage of convenience and break the law. Bronte's purpose is to have enough money to continue her projects of creating gardens in the inner city for the disadvantaged. George's purpose is to obtain the coveted green card, since he arrived only on a visitor's visa. The unexpected twists and turns in this creative comedy provide great entertainment, making it a "must see" film ...

VHS : Gallipoli [1981]
I recently rewatched the film and can say that it still works as an intense drama and as a serious antiwar statement. Weir's overt hostility toward the British commanders at Gallipoli, however, doesn't stand up as well. Weir decided to focus his film not on the massive armies battling away in Europe, but on two individuals living in Australia. Archy Hamilton (Mark Lee) and Frank Dunne (Mel Gibson) are two of the fastest runners in the country. News of the escalating war in Europe is vague and distant, referenced only when someone brings up a news story they saw in the paper. Both Frank and Archy become best mates. They then join the army and head for the Dardanelles.

What the war effort needs are bodies capable of running headlong into a withering wall of machine gun ... Read More:
