...although I loaned the film to a colleague at work who could not see the point of the film. I kinda thought that was partly the essence of it.

I've since read the book too and have to say that I prefer the film although the novel is very well written but there are a few differences between the two.

Well acted, well shot and it is the stuff of dreams. If you can't see the point you won't see the game...

VHS : The Sum of All Fears [2002]
Action thriller set in 2002 in which a neo-Nazi terrorist group gets hold of a small Israeli nuclear bomb that went missing during the Arab-Israeli war of 1973 and uses it to try and trick America and Russia into nuclear war with each other, and the efforts of a CIA analyst played by Ben Affleck to prevent this nightmare scenario from happening. Not a bad thriller, with one particularly horrifying moment on which the whole film hinges, but it must be said I have seen films with `preventing World War Three' plots that had greater urgency (e.g. Crimson Tide starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman). Still, worth a look.

VHS : Sneakers [1992]
There are very few films that remain incessantly entertaining after repeated viewings but this is certainly one of them. I would describe it as a comfort movie - one to watch with the girlfriend on stormy afternoons or reassuringly peaceful evenings.
Sneakers is a feelgood comedy-thriller with a plausible and pacy plot and fine performances from a cast that works wonderfully well together.
Reminiscent of 1950's British espionage or courtroom thrillers, it relies, not upon contrived set-piece action sequences but upon strong plot and fine comedic performances from Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Mary McDonnell and River Phoenix (among others).
A particularly pleasing aspect of the movie is the soundtrack - composed by James Horner and featuring ... Read More:
