VHS : Theorem [1968]
This is a great film, but it requires more patients than a bankrupt proctologist. The difficulty in watching this film is that the symbols are not the servants to the meaning, but the masters, and few people like watching a film that is "unrealistic" because form revolts over matter. It feels at times like T.S. Eliot has taken Emily Dickinson by the hand and is giving her a guided tour of the Waste Land.
I admire this film greatly but I will never like it.

VHS : Accattone [1962]
If you choose to partially ignore the neo-neorealist depiction of the people who inhabit the slums of Rome in this film and concentrate on the character of Accattone [Citti] you may just I consider this to be Pasolini's most amusing work. The lazy, self mythologising ...Accattone is quite funny most of the time. He is one of life's characters who just can't avoid the end fate has in store for him. If you know little of Italians and their behaviour then get this film. You will be pleasantly - and unpleasantly - educated.

This video version of the film is not as "wide screen" as MAMA ROMA.

VHS : Medea [1975]
If you have to see one film in your lifetime, make it Pasolini's Medea. It has everything - superb plot, location, acting, direction - and more. Maria Callas, magnificent on the screen as the abandoned wife Medea, steals your breath away as she first betrayes her people to help Jason steal the Golden Fleece, and then wreaks a terrible revenge when she is in turn betrayed by him for another woman. Pasolini's direction is gentle yet precise, allowing Callas to unfold in all the vehemence of her passion, elciting from her a great performance. A must for all lovers of great films!

VHS : Oedipus Rex [1967]
Despite the inspiring North African setting this movie falls flat, primarily because the psychological profile of Oedipus is not sufficiently developed. Sophocles' original contains so many open questions (such as why Oedipus would want to kill Laius) which are not satisfactorily explained in this realist adaptation. Pasolini's attempt to turn Oedipus into a 'non-intellectual' (as the documentary explains) does not really work; this rôle requires ample explanation, especially in the passages where Oedipus and Jocasta speculate whether or not he is her son - and dismiss it. Here, the acting is simply too stiff and inexplicit to render the cinematic text meaningful.

I was going to show this film to a Grade 12 class, with the intention ... Read More:

VHS : Hawks And Sparrows [1966]
The film as a whole might be a bit problematic, but a few brilliant scenes in it makes it a master piece. Watching this film you can only be amased how could Pasolini be so wise and yet so unfull of himself. His cinematic sense of humour is a gift so rare in it's self irony and humanism. I heard he did he's wonderful short film: "Earth as it appears from the moon" as a second try to do "Hawks and Sparrows" again, better, since he thought "Hawks" came out too ideological. What a genious, he made two great films because he was dissatisfied with one.

VHS : The Decameron [1972]
On a sunny day in Naples, a rich young man comes to the market to buy horses. He is tricked by a woman into believing he is her brother and he ends in the tank of the toilet, robbed and soiled. But escaping that trap he finds himself in the street and the scene turns fantastic. The women from their windows tell him to disappear and the men in the street tell him just the same. So there he runs away dressed in his underwear soaked in and perfumed with human feces. His descent to hell in a way. He hides from some nocturnal men in a barrel in some underground cellar but not for long. The men are thieves and they hire him on a mission and there the real film really starts. You will have to go and see it if you want to get the details. Who will die and who ... Read More:

VHS : The Canterbury Tales [1972]
Seeing actors speak the lines in english, then have it come out the speakers in Italian, then have English subtitles is a bit convoluted but it works some of the time. I have not seen the other 2 films from the trilogy and in no way profess to be an expert on The Canterbury Tales, though I know the Miller's Tale well from school!. This segment seemed to be faithfully adapted, so i'm sure the rest are pretty accurate. Although the nudity etc is pretty tame by today's standards, this would still at least warrant 'a letter home' if teachers wanted to show it in school. It is bawdy and quite indulgent, but as others have commented that is in keeping with both the story and the director. Am now going to seek out the other 2 films and see what they are like....Tom ... VHS : Salo Or The 120 Days Of Sodom [1975]
This film is one of the most unsettling pieces of cinema ever made. Or at least I've ever seen, and I like to think I've seen a lot. Some say that because of this film, it's director, Pier Paolo Pasolini was murdered.
If you believe in watching films that truly push the boundaries of cinematic viewing then watch it.
BE WARNED: Scenes of rape, torture and a scatological nature ensue within it.

Regarding the flaws, this version, like the original version of the Criterion are in a terrible state. It's a typical BFI release, which looks like it's been taken straight from a cinema print. If you can wait, the new Criterion version, released in August 2008 would be the one to try.

VHS : The Gospel According To St. Matthew [1967]
If ever I loved Jesus and I do, this one portrayal of him comes the nearest to the man (God) I follow.Hollywood has never done the portrayal of Jesus justice for me and the only film that has come close for me is Mel Gibsons " the Passion ". And that with reservations .( I have not yet seen Martin Scorcese 's The Last Temptation of Christ" ). None though of all the others whether mentioned here and including ones not discussed here are equal to this one and I was riveted throughout watching it.This film should be in every real christian's film library. It makes me feel like this potrayal of Jesus could be closer to the actual divine Jesus than any other one yet made. This film showing his courage, his endurance, his mercy, his compassion, his wisdom, his miracles moved me beyond ... Read More:
