VHS : Montana [1949]
"Montana Territory...1879...where cattle was king...where the law was a gun...and the men who drove the great herds up from Texas made the rules. They were hard men...they had to be hard to keep alive..." And not just the men. Cattle queen Maria Singleton (Alexis Smith) is not about to let a bunch of stinkin' sheep onto prime cattle land. She and Rod Ackroyd (Douglas Kennedy), equally prejudiced against mutton, run things in this section of Montana Territory. It's not going to be easy or pleasant when Morgan Lane (Errol Flynn) shows up on horseback with a lot of sheep following him. All he wants is a chance to prove that cattle and sheep and share the same land profitably. While he's trying to do this, sometimes with humor, sometimes with his ... Read More:

The story of an American in Mexico who is down on his luck. He eventually teams up with some other Americans in the same boat to go prospecting. Then the trouble starts - Indians, Bandits, Federales and each other.

The old man reminded me of my dad. But I didn't take any stars off for that.

VHS : They Died With Their Boots On [1942]
"They Died With Their Boots On" is a classic. It is has an energy all it own and it gallops unapologetically to its inevitable final. Errol Flynn gives one of his finest performances as General Custer and Olivia de Havilland is irresistible in the part of Libby Custer.

The history portrayed in "They Died With Their Boots On" might be pure Hollywood hokum but it is still the best film ever made on this subject.

In reality General Armstrong Custer was not a liked man. In fact he was hated by his troops and despised in Washington. During his years on the Indian plains Custer's soldiers suffered terribly under his despotic and inconsistent command. Custer made enemies wherever he went. The final battle at the Little Bighorn ... VHS : San Antonio [1945]
"You mean to tell me this little mud Indian village is San Antonio?" says the singer, Jeanne Starr (Alexis Smith), as her stagecoach swings into the plaza.
"Oh, it's nice! You will like it!" bubbles her manager, Sacha Bozic (S. Z. Sakall).
"As far as I'm concerned it's just another place full of wild savages." She's already met Clay Hardin (Errol Flynn), so we know the town can't be that bad. On the other hand, she has yet to encounter the movie's two murderous villains, Roy Stuart (Paul Kelly) and the smooth Legare (Victor Francen).

San Antonio is better than a routine western, but still not much more than a pleasant way to spend an hour and a half. It's the story of Clay Hardin and his determination to bring to justice ... Read More:

VHS : Gentleman Jim [1942]
Gentleman Jim is another case of print the legend, with Errol Flynn playing the legendary boxer as a brash but charismatic social climber in a rollicking entertainment that barely stops for breath. It's as pointless looking for historical accuracy here as it is in Flynn's The Charge of the Light Brigade - this is sheer hokum with all the stops pulled out, filmed on a surprisingly lavish scale and given a real sense of energy by Raoul Walsh's vivid direction. Flynn is still at the height of his powers (you'd never guess he suffered a mild heart attack during the production), with Alexis Smith a beautiful romantic sparring partner and perpetual sidekick Alan Hale along for good measure, this time as Flynn's father (Jack Carson takes sidekick duties this ... VHS : Angels With Dirty Faces/The Roaring Twenties [1938/1939)
This movie - the pluperfect example of the Warner gangster film - seems a better film today than at the time it was released. Directed with flair by Raoul Walsh, it moves at a cracking pace and is especially well cast with a gallery of Warner Bros regulars. Cagney dominates the picture with one of his most likeable and poignant performances, always full of humour and above all, humanity. The attention to period detail is outstanding and especially, with regard to its music score - a brilliant collage of contemporary popular songs woven into a marvellous dramatic score by that unsung genius, Ray Heindorf who also provides the knockout orchestrations.

The finale is pure magic, as Cagney dies in the arms of Gladys George, on the steps of a large church ... Read More:
