VHS : Gandhi [1982]
This is a slightly slowed paced, but thoroughly engaging look at the life of Gandhi. It shows how his ideas developed and how revered he was in India and how respected he was by the British. Kingsley is masterly in this role and really makes you believe you are watching Gandhi rather that just a portrayal. The scenery is amazing, as is the direction and although it is a little long, it is a great place to start if you're interested in learning more about this great man.

VHS : Cry Freedom [1987]
An awesome soundtrack that served it's unique inspiration on many levels. I made love to my first girlfriend to this ebullient South African anthem. There is a moment when the choir raises the skies with, Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika ("Lord bless Africa")Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo ("May her spirit rise high up ")Yizwa imithandazo yethu. ("Hear thou our prayers ")Nkosi sikelela Thina lusapho lwayo. ("Lord bless us, Your people."). Unfortunately, the album does not date very well, and there are many others and better on the theme, but this is still special and truly a work of genius. Ironically, the film itself does not do the soundtrack honest justice

VHS : Chaplin [1991]
In the hands of director Richard Attenborough, Charlie Chaplin's life story becomes a sweeping and touching film. Robert Downey, Jr. gives an unforgettable performance as Chaplin, who rose from the slums of London to become Hollywood's favorite silent movie character, the Tramp. Along the way, Charlie had to deal with his mother's insanity, his love affairs, marriages, and a paternity scandal, all involving much younger women, and investigation by none other than J. Edgar Hoover.

This very entertaining story vividly recreates the early days of the movie industry. The sets and costumes are magnificent, as is the John Barry soundtrack, which features Chaplin's own song, "Smile." Downey gives the performance of a lifetime playing a controversial ... Read More:

I haven't seen this on stage so I judge only by what I see here. This is hard to define as a musical as there are so few actual musical numbers in the traditional sense. It veers from the odd proper musical number to odd bits of singing without any connection. The whole Cassie story seems attached to the rest of the film and why don't they just chuck her out of the theatre - how hard is that? It opens well with the mass auditions but it is downhill after that. The only decent musical number is the T1ts and @ss song which earns the entire 1 star here. The rest makes very little sense. Why do they all come back for the ending? Odd.

Anthony Hopkins stars as Corky, a ventriloquist/magician with a pathological fear of failure. When his life starts to become surreal, he looks up the girl he secretly loved in high school, Peggy (played by Ann-Margaret), and, with the help of his wiseguy dummy, Fats, sparks fly between them. Merideth plays his agent who discovers that Corky thinks Fats is real, thus setting off a chain of events that includes murder.

Anthony Hopkins is utterly convincing as the fearful and hallucinating ventriloquist. He is so jumpy and intense, and he suffers so deeply from his fears, that you will be on the edge of your seat. Hopkins' manic performance is dynamite; he will break your heart and send chills up your spine. He does a good job with his American accent, and also ... Read More:

VHS : In Love And War [1997]
This film is directed by Sir Richard Attenborough a director/actor whom I have the utmost respect for, I love films like Gandhi and Shadowlands, but sadly for me this did not even remotely touch either of these films.

The main problems for me is a lack of heart in most of the film, plus the lead actors were simply not convincing enough, I do like Sandra Bullock alot, but until now I've only ever seen her in light hearted/comedy roles, after this showing it's not hard to see why, Chris O'Donnell gives yet another acting class (on how not to act), how this guy has ever appeared in as many films is beyond me this can only be down to his looks, either that or he's got an amazing agent.

The film is okay and would recommend that you hire before potentially ... Read More:
