VHS : Lord Jim [1965]
A strangely monotonous film that conspicuously fails to do justice to the Conrad novel. The steamy Southeast Asian settings are wonderful, and the star-studded cast includes tried and tested favourites of the day such as Peter O'Toole, Jack Hawkins, Eli Wallach, Kurt Jurgens and James Mason. But somehow the film never really takes off. It's far too long, the dialogue lurches between the impenetrable and the corny, and Peter O'Toole's intense-blue-eyed-gazing-into-space routine, which served him so well in Lawrence of Arabia, irritates more than it impresses. There are some good moments, such as the scenes of the storm-tossed ship Patna, and James Mason, sporting a short-brimmed black bowler hat of antique design, is splendid to behold in the ... Seeing this film again recently reminded me just what a great film it is. It's a very powerful story and the film keeps closely to the original play. The acting couldn't be better. All of the actors are excellent. Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman are superb: he in the way he depicts his feelings of hopelessness and radiates such antipathy and tension; and she, in subtle glances and body language, her enduring love for him and disappointment that their marriage is childless and failing.

I don't think a better film version of the play could be made than this one.

VHS : Dollars (1971) a.k.a. The Heist
$ also known as Dollars and in the UK also has been titled 'The Heist' is a 1971 caper film made by Columbia Pictures. It was written and directed by Richard Brooks and produced by M.J. Frankovich.

The film stars Goldie Hawn, Warren Beatty with Gert Fröbe, Robert Webber and Scott Brady. It was filmed in Hamburg, Malibu and Sweden.

The film's title appears in the opening credits only in the form of a giant character, as would be used in a sign, being transported by a crane.

Beatty is an employee of a large bank in Hamburg, West Germany. He plots with a hooker with a heart of gold, played by Hawn, to rob the safe deposit boxes of the bank.

The building depicted from exterior as the bank was really ... Read More:

It's been a long time since I last watched this film, but I do remember it making a big impression on me, with two or three scenes in particular. A great cast of course, it's based on a great novel, and I see here what I didn't know, that the writer/director is Richard Brooks, not quite an all time great perhaps, but a highly regarded specialist in movie adaptions of novels, nominated five times in the 50s and 60s for the screenwriting Oscar and winning it once. This has all the ingredients to be a great movie, I can't honestly remember if it was or not, but I would love the chance to watch it again and find out.

VHS : Elmer Gantry [1960]
Elmer Gantry doesn't need a lightshow, radio mikes or his own TV channel, he creates his own energy and carries all before him with a gift of the gab that can turn any situation to his advantage. Phoney as a two-dollar bill and first seen drinking, womanising and fighting in that order, Gantry is a crude, vulgar showoff with a vocabulary that belongs in an outhouse who goes from selling vacuum cleaners to selling religion in a travelling revival show. Worming his way under her guard to become bad cop to Jean Simmons' Sister Sharon's good cop, he damns them and she saves them. If he's a sharp operator, she's not exactly a mug herself: "God chose me. I chose you." Before long, he's converting her to the ways of the flesh and all hell breaks loose... ... Read More:

VHS : Bite The Bullet (1975)
Very much an overlooked Western, this boasts a superb, tough guy cast, stunning, and very rugged locations , and superb cinematography. Not to mention a good screenplay from veteran writer/director Richard Brooks.
The story concerns a 700 mile endurance horse race, over frozen mountain paths and sun drenched deserts.
There are 9 entrants, including one-time Rough Rider, Sam Clayton (Gene Hackman),former prostitute, Miss Jones (Candice Bergen), mercenary Luke Matthews (James Coburn), wise old-timer 'Mister', (Ben Johnson),plus a young ambitious hothead (Jan-Michael Vincent) & a titled Englishman, (Ian Bannen).
It's a great cast and a really enjoyable gritty western. Anyone who's either a fan of any of the main stars or loves tough ... Read More:

VHS : Anderson Tapes, The / The Man With The Deadly Lens [1971]
Sean Connery was on top form in Richard Brooks' undervalued Wrong is Right (released outside the US as The Man With the Deadly Lens in a bizarre attempt to convince international audiences it was Connery's then impending comeback as James Bond!), a colossal box-office disaster in 1982 that suddenly seems relevant all over again as Connery's superstar TV reporter finds himself mixed up in various Middle East schemes involving two stolen nuclear bombs, terrorists, the CIA, an election campaign and chequebook journalism. Very much in the vein of The President's Analyst, albeit far less psychedelic, it's filled with great swipes at political double speak ("You deny it?" "Of course not: to deny it would be to admit that there was something to deny.") and the ... Read More:
