VHS : Kramer vs Kramer [1979]
Kramer vs. Kramer is one film to hold on too and not forget. It isn't one of the most popular films ever made and is certainly one of the weakest best picture films, but it does not mean it still isn't important. I thought the movie was well done and made you just want to watch more and more of it. The performances were the best positive for the film and Dustin Hoffman played one of his best roles he's ever done as the lonely workaholic who has to take care of his son, as his wife separates from him. Billy, who is Hoffman's son, played another great performance along with Meryl Streep, playing the depressed mother of Billy. I highly recommend it.

VHS : Billy Bathgate [1991]
This film is great proof for the old addage that great books rarely translate into great films- though that is a general statement: for every Empire of the Sun, The Magus & Dead Babies, you have a Grapes of Wrath, LA Confidential or Age of Innocence. You can even have a script from the esteemed playwright/screenwriter Tom Stoppard (Brazil, Shakespeare in Love, Enigma) and music from the great Mark Isham and appearances by the great Steve Buscemi and still not have a half-decent film.

This comes across as a poor-man's Bugsy- though the gangster film had been definitively rendered a genre that almost had litle mileage left after such iconic greats as Once Upon a Time in America, Goodfellas & Scarface. The structure appears ... Read More:

Antony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman are just brilliant in their roles, in this movie that should be better known and regarded.

Historical racism is contrasted with what Hopkins' character refers to as 'The double dyed hyprocracy of political correctness'. Difficult decisions taken in youth cascade down the decades. I find it fascinating and thought-provoking.

I never like to give the plot away, this one unfolds believably with tragic consequences, that kept me on the edge of my seat. It's well worth checking out.

VHS : Twilight [1998]
For me in the movies, few things are as satisfying as watching two old pros who have the game down cold play a scene together. In Twilight, when the old pros include Paul Newman and Gene Hackman, I can have a very good time. The old pros also include Susan Sarandon and James Garner, in a tale of murder, blackmail and regret.

Harry Ross (Paul Newman) is a retired cop who has been living in Los Angeles with his friends Catherine Ames (Susan Sarandon) and Jack Ames (Gene Hackman). The Ames were big movie stars once, but now Jack Ames is dying of cancer. Catherine Ames first husband disappeared mysteriously twenty years ago. Now it appears Jack and perhaps Catherine are being blackmailed about just what actually happened to the guy. Jack asks Harry ... Read More:
