VHS : Deanna Durbin: The Collection - Because Of Him/Christmas Holiday/Mad About Music/One Hundred Men And A Girl/Three Smart Girls [1936]
Deanna Durbin's characterisations are as sweet and innocent as the childhood memories I have of Saturday TV matinee screenings of her movies. The Deanna Durbin Collection of five Black and White movies provide a good mix of Durbin playing the role of young teenager ('Mad About Music', '100 Men and A Girl', 'Three Smart Girls') through to Durbin's flirtation with Film Noir ('Christmas Holiday').

I feel Durbin is at her best playing younger roles as her age-defying looks and her quintessential wholesomeness fit perfectly within the 1930's American musical film genre. Her films were produced as 'feel good' escapism and they work wonderfully on that level. Sit down with milk and cookies and invite any member of your family, from ... Read More:

VHS : Christmas Holiday [1944]
Not a particularly huge hit when released in 1944, 'Christmas Holiday' is really an extraordinary film, ahead of its time in my opinion. It is interesting to see Gene Kelly as the 'villian', not something we see often. When I first watched it, I really didn't know what to expect, and I can say that it left a huge impact on me, which led to my watching it twice more. It has to be one of the best (and underrated) black and white film. You won't be disappointed.

Nice DVD transfer too...special features only include a stills gallery, still, there are some nice shots here. Highly recommended film.

VHS : The Spiral Staircase [1946]

The original and best.

A claustrophobic picture with rather wooden performances from most of its cast - especially that of George Brent, who wasn't really such a great actor, but popular in his day. This also stars Elsa Lanchester - a great actress, who when not the leading lady, was able to do wonders with 'bit' parts. Here she plays the rather drab looking housekeeper. However, Elsa, contrary to popular opinion, was in fact a very attractive lady! (she should be seen in her more glamorous roles of the thirties) Her very pretty features can be seen here in one subtle shot when she is seen by candlelight in profile, as she knocks a candle to the floor when down in the cellar with George Brent.
