VHS : Bedknobs And Broomsticks - Special Edition (1971) (Disney)
This is one of those dvds you can get out any time of year over and over again and it still appeals. Who would have thought combining a witch, a doctor and WWII would create such wonder.

The characters created by Angela Lansbury (Miss Price the good witch) and David Thomlinson (Dr Amelius Brown)are wonderful and the combination of settings, singing, dancing and animation are very well balanced. Our whole family love this film.

VHS : Jane Eyre [1943]
I was induced to read Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre," a beloved literary classic, at the relatively early age of eleven - all because I saw this movie. I had stayed-up late on a Saturday night, with my favorite aunt as company, and we watched the 1944 version of Jane Eyre, with Jane Fontaine and Orson Welles, on TV. At the conclusion, I noticed I had cried my way through a box of tissues and had become a fan forever. The next day I visited the library. Although I have seen three or four cinematic interpretations of "Jane Eyre" since that time, Director Robert Stevenson's production, co-written for the screen by Aldous Huxley, John Houseman, and Mr. Stevenson is by far my favorite. The writers and director remained faithful to Miss Bronte's magnificent ... Read More:

VHS : Old Yeller
Old Yeller was my favorite movie growing up and it still is one of my favorites. I used to sing the movie's opening tune "Old Yeller was a mongrel" over and over again to myself. I couldn't remember any of the words beyond that, though.

It is, without question, the most heart-tugging Disney movie of them all. The story begins in the Texas desert in 1869, where our fury hero is looking for adventure and, while chasing a rabit, inadvertently befriends a Texas family. The father has just left for a trip to Kansas and so the oldest son, Travis Coates, is the man of the house. At first Travis Coates wants nothing to do with the dog he calls Old Yeller (because his fur is yellow) and even throws rocks at him. After his little brother claims Old Yeller as ... Read More:

VHS : Owd Bob [1938]
Charming, bittersweet, Ealingesque comedy-drama about the trials and tribulations of Cumberland hill-farmers, their womenfolk and, of course, their dogs - Owd Bob of the title being one such - in the early Twentieth Century.

The plot revolves around the rivalry between wily old Scotsman Adam MacAdam (played by music hall star Will Fyffe) and newcomer Davey Moore (played by John Loder) as they prepare to pit their champion sheepdogs - Black Wull and Owd Bob respectively - against each other in a forthcoming sheepdog trial. One or other of the dogs appears be responsible for a spate of sheep worrying incidents and, come the denouement, when the true culprit is revealed and what must be done is done, you'll be sobbing into your hanky, I can tell you!
