VHS : The Sound Of Music [1965]
I had to return my borrowed 'original' VHS tape and I didn't want the DVD (high up in a recent survey of most wanted gadgets: a button on a DVD remote labeled "Just play the goddam film"). When I received the tape I was disappointed to see "DIGITALLY MASTERED FOR SUPERIOR SOUND AND PICTURE QUALITY". Why do they lie like this? Luckily the sound has survived but the picture is awful compared to the very old, much played borrowed tape. The picture has a brownish tinge and soft focus all the way through.
The reason the tape is digitally 'mastered' is presumably the same as with digitally mastered LP's; so as not to show up the limitations of the new CD's and DVD's. However I can remember enough of the borrowed tape to continue to enjoy this ... Read More:

VHS : West Side Story [1961]
Outstanding. I get bored sometimes with some of the long dance sequences in classic musicals, even in great movies like Singin' in the Rain and the Fred-and-Ginger musicals, but this is one of the few films where the dance is truly a pleasure to watch. The lead actors Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer are not often mentioned much in review but the youthfulness and sincerity of their performances is key to the film's success. Those who produced the film considered many options for these two roles and as with everything else, they got it right.

VHS : Tribute To A Bad Man [1956]
Filmed in Colour Cinemascope (aspect ratio 2.35:1) this is a teriffic story about J.Rodock (James Cagney) who owns a horse ranch and breeds and sells horses.

On this ranch is his woman Jo (Irene Papas), and a bunch of wranglers. Their duties are to train the horses, and if any theieves try and steal them, to hunt them down and Hang em'.

The story is told from the perspective of a young man named Steve, who has left his grocery clerk store in Pennslyvania and longs for the life of a 'cowboy'.

This film has it all, Scenary, Love, Action, and most of all the brillance of James Cagney - the most versatile and proffessional actor the screen has ever seen.

I honestly cannot recommend this film enough, even if you don't like Westerns ... Read More:

Five and a half stars for this. TDTESS is a great film; entertaining, well acted - Michael Rennie is stone cold superb, he totally makes the part and the Mom, the kid and the Prof are all good; good direction - it keeps you hooked from the start; music by Hermann; the pace is spot on and the story and premise convincing. This is one of the best films ever with a message more pertinent than ever. Buy it for someone and then borrow it - you'll want your own copy. Apparently there's a remake in the pipeline due 2008, but even if it's great, this film is a tremendous achievement. Nice one, team TDTESS.

'ST the movie' is a real 'movie.' Meaning: not made for watching on the small screen. The best part of the movie is it's visuals: long, drawn-out scenes of the Enterprise docking or V-ger swallowing our heroes whole. Great subtle music; effects pre-CGI but it all looks great(if a bit dated, especially the opening shot of the three Klingon warbirds)
Revelation at the end also struck me as pretty original. (And that's saying something in the SF-universe)
But: what's up with gloomy Spock? Hey buddy, i know you're a broody Vulcan and all that, but you're half happy-go-lucky human as well! Forget?

9.Somebody Up There Likes Me [1956] starring: Paul Newman, Pier Angeli, Everett Sloane, Eileen Heckart, Sal Mineo

VHS : Somebody Up There Likes Me [1956]
To my mind, this is one of Paul Newman's finest performances. In fact, being such a "pretty" boy has perhaps done him no favours in terms of being taken seriously because this (and the excellent portrayal of the eponimous "Cool Hand Luke") are right up there among the best screen performances I've seen. However that doesn't seem to be common knowledge amongst film buffs.

"Somebody..." is based on the autobiography of boxer Rocky Graziano and Newman brings immense power and vulnerability to a damaged man who is nonetheless blessed with immense strength and resilience, both physically & mentally. With a brilliant script, excellent direction and a strong support cast, this is a first rate movie that should appeal to all, whether you're a boxing fan or not. I would argue that ... Read More:

VHS : The Magnificent Ambersons [1942]
A poignant drama that is still powerful and meaningful after sixty years. The direction and photography are impeccable and the performances are completely memorable. The story as a whole is brilliant even despite the interference of studio heads. A classic in the truest sense of the word.
