VHS : Dante's Peak [1997]
I've never been huge fan of disaster films, as I've always found them to be over the top, or just an excuse for some special effects. Nevertheless I decided to give the pre-millennium Dante's Peak a chance and all things considered I'm pretty glad I did as I really enjoyed the film.

Set in Dante's Peak (hence the title I guess) the film tells of a major volcano located in the heart of the town, that's about to blow it top. Despite the increasingly alarming warning signs, the idea of evacuation is considered premature and brushed aside, despite the best efforts of Pierce Brosnan (who plays the volcano expert) to convince them otherwise. There are some really spectacular special effects, but all have been done in such a way that ... Read More:

It would appear that this film has attracted a lot more controversy than it is worth. Spy movies are a favorite of mine and I found this one typical of the genre. The spy game is based on trust, deception and ultimately betrayal and this offering certainly didn`t disappoint in that respect. It was, perhaps for some, a touch slow in parts but that only gave the viewer time to catch up. Definitely a film to watch more than once so you can unravel the plot with hindsight.

Don't buy this!
The packaging on the box claims this is ' unrated' - IT ISN'T!
ALL the sex scenes are missing - how the studio involved can get away with the lie on the packaging is a mystery to me, but they have!
Worthless sanitised US version, NOT the print that was released in Europe.
AVOID!!

VHS : White Sands [1992]
An early 1990s effort directed by NZ director Roger Donaldson (Species etc....) with great cast of William Dafoe in an early lead role as a local sherif who lets his enthusiasm to solve a murder lead to impersonating a dead FBI agent; Mickey Rourke as gum chewing and nattily dressed villain (not too different from his few "good guy" roles now I think of it!); an affluent femme fatale with a difference in Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Sam Jackson as a wild card FBI operative, plus a well scripted multiple double crossing story that keeps you guessing till the end, all beautifully filmed in New Mexico, a part of the USA I still think is amazing for its natural scenery.

I completely missed this on release but purchased the DVD in a clearance ... Read More:

This movie makes you relax, makes you want to travel, to have fun. It is one of the best movies i have ever seen. Drinks, women, friendship, drama, it has everything. I recommend you watch it right before you go on a trip, preferably to the seaside, it can be a great "guidebook" for parties. When i have a good time, i can't help it and i think about "Cocktail", the one word that can best describe what you feel when you see the movie, and after that when you think about it is "If you want it, life can be fun" ; OK, maybe there are more words. I bet that after you see it you'll want to go with your friends, walk on the beach, drink something, in short, have a memorable night.

VHS : Smash Palace [1981]
One of the best films to ever come out of New Zealand, it tells the story of love gone bad, broken dreams and a kid in the middle.

Bruno Lawrence plays a uniquely Kiwi character in this film. A man who wants to do it alone, won't ask for help, but can't get on track. He is obsessed with a past that he walked away from for love, but that decision has left him bitter toward his wife and violence is always just under the surface. The tension in this film is almost unbearable as we watch the relationship deteriorate rapidly into abuse, all the while feeling the pain of it through the eyes of their young daughter, an outstanding performance from a young Greer Robson.

When he finds out his wife may be having an affair it drives him to an outrageous act that, due to Bruno's incredibly ... Read More:

This is one of the most enjoyable films I have seen in years. Tha acting is brilliant throughout; the plot is gripping; the scenery is breathtaking and the music is unintrusive and subtle.

There are some great ideas explored in the plot about slef-discipline and long term planning verses giving in to the pleasure of the moment.

But most enjoyable for me were the performances, particularly of Anthony Hopkins as Captain Bligh. All the characters have depth and are completely believable: there are no goodies and baddies, just thoroughly tested people whose motives we can understand.

The idea behind the plot is good, but as most of the concept is borrowed from Alien, and Giger obviously didn't work too hard on an original idea, it makes it to the end of the train journey before you spot the cliches, and the blatent copying. Which covers the first twenty minutes.

Woefully miscast, with Marg Helgenberger essentially doing what she now does in CSI, Alfred Molina seriously out of place, and Forest Whitaker being ignored most of the time, when you can see he's right.

Since the entire plot consists of the foursome trying to track the alien, getting picked off one by one and eventually burning it, not forgetting the unnoticed baby with the reptilian tongue, its a small wonder that this one was allowed to escape the storyboard, where someone should have spotted it - "uh, guys, this ...
