VHS : Titanic Town [1999]
Based in 1972 Belfast when children played in the street and snipers hid in the bushes, a housewife cried out against the silent system after her best friend was shot by accident. Julie Waters plays the role of Bernie McPhilemy convincingly as the mother who simply wants to just know why the shooting can't be held after nightfall, when then children are off the street, not suspecting the tangle of intrigue, anger, and political puppeteering she has entered. Ciaran Hinds portrays the dark dicotomy of the times, trying to keep his family intact with sarcastic humour and devil-may-care bravado while inwardly being torn apart by the stress. This movie does not try to state who is right or wrong but asks how in the world do people cope with the insanities. ... Read More:

VHS : Jane Austen Box Set [1972]
The BBC versions of the Jane Austin classics are excellent. Every production is true to the novel and in general the casting/acting/scenery is fantastic. These videos capture some of the finest British acting and writing ever. The most familar video here will usually be the 'Pride and Prejudice' (with Colin Firth :-) ) but 4 of the others - Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion and Mansfield Park ae also excellent interpretations of the novels. I never liked Northanger Abbey so therefore the video never appealled to me! The Sense and Sensibility is not the Emma Thompson version and Emma is not the Gwyneth Paltrow version in case you are considering this item because you are expecting those films to be included.

5.America's Sweethearts / Notting Hill / The Mexican [1999] starring: Julia Roberts, Tim McInnerny, Gina McKee, Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini

VHS : Persuasion [1995]
Persuasion is my favourite book and this adaptation does it justice. The tone of the film matches the tone of the book: whistful. Anne is beautifully portrayed by Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds is wonderful as the charismatic Captain Wentworth. It's far subtler than the more recent ITV adaptation, and because of that all the more beautiful. Scenes in this film would melt the hardest of hearts, yet it is still funny. The perfect comfort film.

VHS : Buddha Of Suburbia [1993]
A great piece of drama which also highlights the very colourful 70's, a great time or maybe they were great because they are all those years away! Even so things seemed so different then and I believe The Buddha of Suburbia certainly captured something very real in the way of cultural awareness and with a society very much on the change! Why isn't this on DVD?
