VHS : Repulsion [1965]
I've seen "Repulsion" quite a few times over the years, and it never gets any less absorbing to watch in spite of knowing the outcome.
Catherine Denueve is incandescently beautiful in it but this all masks her real persona which I guess is shown in the early photograph of her when she was just a child. The rest of her family, involved all together in the event of having their picture taken, but her, aloof, distant, in the background, staring into space, not really wanting to be a part of it. I think this showed a real understanding on the part of the director of the type of personality she had that would later erupt into murderous rage as a result of her paranoia and mental isolation. Sad. Disturbing. And quite possibly one of the most ... Read More:

VHS : Bitter Moon [1992]
3 words to define one of the most dramatic, dark erotic films of modern cinema... passion, obsession, jealousy. roman polanski proving he is one of the greatest, long standing directors out there.. up there with his : tenant, rosemarys baby, and the most recent acclaimed the pianist..
peter coyote ( he was in ET!), emmanuele seigner as seductive as it gets, and a perfectly cast hugh grant, in his usual persona but at the same time in his most serious role ever, in a story that once seen will stay with you for a long long time.. forget "last tango in paris" this is as deep, unsettling, hypnotic and sensual as an erotic film can get.....

VHS : Death And The Maiden [1995]
Roman Polanski has a knack for great film making: "Knife in the Water," "Bitter Moon," and "Repulsion" are just some, thought they share a common thread--that of human corruption and a road you'd never think yourself on. "Death and the Maiden" is no different in this respect, though this is one of his more brilliant productions. While Sigourney Weaver is a perfect neurotic wife who thinks she recognizes a former torturer of hers (that her husband brings home, nevertheless), it is Ben Kingsley (the alledged torturer) who steals the show. Not since his "Ghandi" have I been so riveted to the screen. Watching this, you'll think he's just great, but wait for the last fifteen minutes of the film and he will blow your mind completely. The camera stays on ... Read More:

VHS : Macbeth [1971]
Picture this: Circa 1975, A class of 32 bored, inner city school, O level English kids, dragged off to an arts cinema to see a showing of Polanski's Macbeth. We settled down for a boring couple of hours messing about and talking. Five minutes into the film, you could have heard a pin drop. We were hooked.
We went from complete disinterest, to shakespeare fans in one afternoon. I will always be grateful to that young english teacher (whatever her name was?) for igniting a lifelong interest in literature. If our Headmaster/parents had known what we were going to see, I'm sure the trip would never have happened! But the quality of acting was such, that suddenly we all knew and understood olde worlde english, something which carried on through other ... Read More:

VHS : The Fearless Vampire Killers [1967]aka dance of the vampires
This beautifully shot, stylish Roman Polanski comedy horror, manages to get the balance just right between scares and laughs. Every horror cliche is explored and lampooned, but its all done with such great respect for the genre it is spoofing, that it could easily be classed as a horror film in its own right.
The main joke here is that two intrepid vampire killers, are in fact a couple of bumblimg fools, completely outwitted by the devious, clever vampires they are supposedly hunting. Its a very good joke, and Roman Polanski and Jack Magowran are both excellent as our hapless heroes.
An excellent film that is lovely to look at, and a classic of its kind

VHS : Cul-De-Sac [1966]
It has been 30 years since I first saw this film, yet it still rates as one of my all time favourites. Forget about special effects and daredevil stunts-you won't see either of those in Cul-De-Sac. It's a strange film which highlights the devastating effect that unexpected events can have on human relationships. At first glance it's a black comedy, but running throughout the film are dark menacing undercurrents which maintain the attention of the audience. All of the leading acters are good, but Donald Pleasance, as the bumbling, insecure host to his unwelcome guests is outstanding. In my opinion his best performance ever. Polanski's quirky direction has never been bettered, and the exterior photography is spectacular. Brilliant.

VHS : Frantic [1987]
Emmanuelle Seigner (born June 22, 1966) is a César Award nominated French actress and former fashion model, best known as the wife of Academy Award winning director Roman Polanski, and for her roles in La Vie En Rose, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and Frantic.

She married Polanski in 1989 which was one year after Frantic was released
and they have two children and they live in Paris.

Its one of the best Polanski Films and anyone who knows Paris will feel at Home.

Frantic does not really get going until he meets Emmanuelle Seigner and from that moment she steals the whole Film.

VHS : Rosemary's Baby [1968]
'Rosemary's Baby' is without doubt Roman Polanski's best movie.
Still after fourty years this film scares me. Not in the kind of gruesome (torture-porn) kind of way that the Saw franchise do, but in a deeply psychological way, in the spirit of all the great twentieth century horror films. Rosemary (Mia Farrow) is the young married woman who's just moving into an upstate New York appartment block with her husband, actor Guy (John Cassavetes). The pair soon get to know their neighbours (mainly) Minnie Castevet & her husband Roman Castevet (Sidney Blackmer).
Rosemary's baby is a very scary film, not gruesome (sometimes mildly explicit) but it has that claustrophobic eery feeling & after the first half of the film the feeling that no one can be trusted ... Read More:

VHS : The Ninth Gate [2000]
Take a fantastic novel with two, related, intertwining plot lines. Decide that, to make your film, you need to get rid of one of them and jettison the more interesting one. End up with yet another devil-in-human-form film, and call it "The Ninth Gate"....

Arturo Perez Reverte is a remarkably talented novelist, and "The Dumas Club" is one of his finest tales, which in itself is utterly gripping. Unfortunately, treated like this by Polanski, it just doesn't work for me as a film. It's very frustrating to see what could have been a highly original treatment by a very fine film-maker turned into a relatively banal piece.

The message is very clear - if you enjoyed the novel you would be well advised to keep clear of the film.
