VHS : The Wizard Of Oz (1939)
This movie is so iconic it is deeply ingrained in our culture. As a little girl, and as an adult too, we all want a magical pair of "Dorothy" shoes. The movie's message is very simple; there's no place like home. The magical world of Oz is in technicolor whereas the scenes in Kansas are in black and white. This helps to show how enticing Oz is. The characters are pretty damn good, they don't make em like that anymore. All of the characters go through a personal journey in the film; to get home, to become brave, to get a heart. The plot is as delightful as the characters and the setting, with a dash of humour added in; a must see for young and old, even my quite sensitive 6yr old daughter can handle the scarier bits. The replay value is immeasurable, ... Read More:

VHS : Captains Courageous [1937]
This is a marvelous film. All the usual complinments apply to the writing, direction and of course the acting.

I love this film for the simplicity of the tale. The struggle of the boy to find his true charatacter beneath a bratish exterior. The nurturing of the boy by Spencer Tracy is of course from the tough love shcool of personal developement; it is touching nonetheless as Tracy finds himself deeply attached to and protective of the boy.

The life aboard one of these cod boats was harsh in the extreme. It provides an excellent environment to steel a lost young man to the realities of existence and the lost virtues of character. The fishing scenes and the exubarance of the crew after a good day are wonderful counterpoints to the trials of a ... Read More:

It was a christmas present that I wanted to get the kids.
Since they put it on, there has been no turning back. It was great in a way to rekindal all of the memories I had as a child watching these films.
At the bargain price, it's a must have purchase.

VHS : A Guy Named Joe (1944)
After much searching I was very pleased to be able to get a video copy of this film (through Amazon) so that I could watch it with my Mum who saw the film when she was about 13, and had often mentioned it to me as a good film. She was mad about Van Johnson at the time.

For it's time, the flying sequences / effects are actually not bad, and the "heaven" scenes remind me very much in places of "A matter of Life and Death", (which I love). I love the image of the two men striding across a misty open space / heaven. The transition between earth and heaven is subtly done, for the time.
