VHS : Doctor Who - Cybermen (Limited Edition)
OK let's get this straight: Attack of the Cybermen is not the very best Doctor Who serial but it is a far cry from being the worst and much better than any of the new David Tennant Cybermen stories or 'Silver Nemesis'. The ratings were actually good on transmission and Colin Baker makes an excellent Doctor here, having already made the role his own. The violence is refreshingly different and not OTT IMO (Jon Pertwee was not afraid of being violent when he needed to be and this goes here).

The continuity stuff is on the heavy side but it does not ruin the story or make it inaccessible to the casual viewer. It just adds a (slightly too thick) layer for those in the know.

One of the better Colin Baker productions (the ... Read More:

Every time I watch this one, it starts off superb but then by episode four it starts to collapse. Patrly because the Metebelis Three people are so stupid and can't act. There are mostly good speical effects all along, and the regeneration is fairly standard, but female spiders?

1: Tom Baker is excellent as the deranged Xoanon

2: Louise makes a brilliant entrance as Leela

3: The horda are cute.

4: The tesh are gits, but likeable ones, with their arm flapping!

5: Tom is great as ever as the Doc too.

6: The tribe have more developed characters than usual.

7: Great comic moments, especially how Leela runs into the TARDIS despite the Doc not really wanting to take her.

8: We for once get a sizeable chunk of story to see whats happened after the enemy has been thwarted, which is a nice change.

9: the staue looks impressive.

10: Good actual 25 min eps for a change!

Need I go on?

VHS : Doctor Who - The Deadly Assassin [1976]
This is an excellent adventure written by Robert Holmes, probably the best script writer the show ever had, and who wrote some of my favourite episodes including this, plus 'Spearhead From Space', 'The Ark In Space', 'The Talons Of Weng Chiang' and 'The Caves Of Androzani'.

The Galifrey set is looking a bit dated now, but it also looked quite low-tech in 1976 as well. What really makes this a special episode for me, is the brilliant plot, plus the Doctor going through the Matrix. The Matrix is an hallaguenic dream sequence with the Doctor facing imaginary threats from the Master, plus also being chased by a Bounty Hunter. The threat scenarios are very imaginative, for example: being shot at by a WW1 fighter plane, getting trapped on a railway line, having the water ... Read More:

This is quite a good dr who story. The doc travels back in time to stop lynx from destroying the timeline of earth. Lynx has crashed his ship in medieval England and comes forward in time to steal scientists from a convention to help in his repairs. He needs to use a castle so he gives the bloke that owns the castle some guns, so that he can attack his neighbours and overtake their castle. June Brown aka Dot Branning nee Cotton is the neighbour. What would nasty nick say? I think it's quite humourous especially with the stink bombs and John Pertwee's funny facial expressions!

VHS : Doctor Who - Doctor Who And The Silurians
This is Jon Pertwee's second outing as Doctor Who. It is a good story with some fine performances. Pertwee has comfortably settled into the part, and the two other regulars Nicholas Courtney and Caroline John, give fine strong support. There are also some notable guest appearances from Fulton MacKay, Peter Miles and watch out for a young Geoffrey Palmer.
The silurians are interesting characters, as they are not actually evil, they just believe that the planet is theirs and that mankind is a threat to them. The doctor, with the help of an older silurian, aims (unsuccessfully) to be peacemaker between mankind and the creatures.
The story is a good one with some genuinely frightening moments, in particular when the silurians release their deadly virus. The only ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who The Greatest Show in the Galaxy [1963]
So, then. The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. A tale with a decent reputation, a tale that has been well received by everyone else who's reviewed it so far. An 'oddball story', true, but one which commands far more respect within fandom than, say, Delta and the Bannermen. A difficult story to attack, one would say.

But really, it's tripe, isn't it?

OK, that's not entirely fair. 'Tripe' is a strong word, and it isn't one I'd attach to any Doctor Who story. But if I was forced to, really forced to, Greatest Show is without any doubt the one I would choose.

It's a shame, really, because it boasts some excellent features. Mike Morris above mentions the direction (at some length), and fair point, it's a well directed tale. Also you've got the great ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - Battlefield [1989]
I had heard a lot of bad things about Battlefield. Fortunately, they were all wrong.
Battlefield is a very light, fluffy Doctor Who adventure. It isn't as much 'Who for 9 year olds', as someone claimed. The writer tries to have a bit of fun with the characters, and in doing so makes a interesting, and even sometimes dark, story.

So ignore those nay-sayers. Battlefield is a treat.

VHS : Doctor Who - Silver Nemesis (The Extended Version) [1988] [1963]
It's hard to believe that "Silver Nemesis" got less than 5 stars average rating. This is an exceptionally good show, especially when you consider that it comes from the Sylvester McCoy era, where most shows were real stinkers! The lovely and attractive Ace is certainly a welcome addition, and the contrasting dialog between her and the Silver Nemesis sent chills up my spine. When Ace says, "Catch you later" to the Silver Nemesis, it's both funny and scary because we know Ace didn't know what to say. If you were faced with the Silver Nemesis you wouldn't know what to say either. It gives us a sense that these characters are very much out of time from each other, and have come together to do what they are suppose to do. Not everyone enjoys this form of entertainment, but don't shoot it down just because you don't ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - The Trial Of A Timelord
This is a bit of a mixed bag of stories from 1986. By this time the original series had long past its peak and was just about ready to be rested. Colin Baker is a fine actor who gives good performances throughout these episodes. It's a pity he didn't have better storylines (and a better outfit) to work with!
The first two stories - The Mysterious Planet and Mindwarp are disappointing. Nicola Bryant's Peri makes her exit from the series at the end of episode 8 and it's all a bit of a mess. (She is later seen briefly at the end of episode 14).
The final two stories are a little better. Terror of the Vervoids is a fine suspenseful story, which for some brief moments brings back memories of some of the classic stories from the earlier periods of the show. The guest cast are on good form. However, be warned. This ... Read More:
