This fine movie is worth watching just for Laurence Olivier at his sophisticated sexiest. He exudes British qualities of confidance, pragmatism and eccentricity. The enigma surrounding his dark moods unfolds as the story continues. There is however, a lot more than him that is good in this film.

Beautiful, doe eyed Joan Fontaine is well cast as his un-named second wife. The character is overwhelmed and out of place as the lady of a great house. Director Alfred Hitchcock told Joan that the rest of the cast hated her, to get that awkward feeling from her acting. This was hardly true, although Laurence had wanted his wife Vivien Leigh for the role.

Hitchcock shows his skill and mastery of suspense here. This is ... Read More:

This St. Patrick’s Day my wife and I decided to build a fire and enjoy this Irish classic. The music, the scenery, the story line and the dialogue ensure its enduring status.

A real test of a work of art is whether the viewer keeps finding something new in it time after time. “The Quiet Man “ meets this test. This time I was impressed by the cultural tension between the Americanism of Sean Thornton (John Wayne) and the Irishness of the other characters, something which I had not picked up on so keenly in past viewings.

Whether you are ready for your first or fiftieth viewing, “The Quiet Man” will always be a treat.

VHS : It's A Wonderful Life [1946]
Yes, it is a great life affirming movie with its heart firmly in the right place...BUT...personally I would have prefered not such a happy ending, or a very different kind of happy ending - I just feel that the miraculous turnaround of George's fortunes at the end, while rightly suggesting that all good deeds may be remembered, and returned in kind, missed a real chance to state that happiness didn't have to depend on material wealth at all - After all, when he was given his old life back, George's euphoric happiness was based soley upon his family and friends, regardless of his dire financial state! This was a real chance to bang the point home about the real dangers of capitalism, but it was totally spurned. Indeed, this ending almost suggested, after ... Read More:

A great film that perfectly depicts the way of life even today in the Hebrides.A cargo of whisky sinking into the sea,but not before the locals get their share first.
A classic scene is Duncan MacRae swallowing all the evidence before the exciseman enters his house.
Brilliant scenery, great acting and a brilliant music score.
On a lighter note, get a few friends round, watch the film together, and every time the cast have a dram you have one with them.
By the end of the film you think you're in Todday with them!!!

VHS : The Guns Of Navarone [1961]
This is a superb war film. Based around the (fictional) efforts of a group of disparate SAS type specialists to destroy two huge guns blocking Allied martime accesss across the Aegean Sea, it has bags of tension, atmosphere and great characterisation. The team is comprised of Mallory (Gregory Peck), a mountaineer and reluctant "volunteer" for this task; Miller (David Niven), an English gentleman and thoroughly cynical explosives expert; Andrea Stavrou (Antony Quinn) a Cretan "man of honour" who has vowed to kill Mallory once the job is over to assuage his code of honour and avenge his family's death (which he blames on a previous miltary blunder by Mallory); Stanley Baker plays a knife expert who has lost his nerve; Irene Papas a proud Greek resistance worker and ... I don't really have anyhting to say about this film but, having just rewatched it, I do feel like adding to the praise. It's such a good film.

Mesmerising. The complex set is ingenious. James Stweart is wonderful. Grace Kelly is gorgeous. The mystery reels you in and the suspense is built very skillfully, leading to a truly nail-biting climax. I like the clever way the neighbours' lives reflect the lives of Jeff and Lisa. Beautiful (very colourful) restoration, too.

VHS : The Sound Barrier (1952)
The DVD version of "Breaking the sound barrier" 1952, a David Lean production, that I watched is disk one of "The World War Collection" May 27, 2008; this is funny as it has nothing to do with a war.

Originally produced by London Films. Copyright 1952 British Lion Film Corporation Ltd. at Shepperton. With the co-operation of the Ministry of Supply and the Director and Members of the Society of British Aircraft Constructors.

The film itself had Great Britton 1952 typed all over it. We get lots of footage of different 50's jets (The de Havilland COMET, The Vickers-Supermarine ATTACKER, the de Havilland VAMPIRE 113, and The Vickers-Supermarine SWIFT Rolls-Royce `Avon' Engine.)

The basic Story and Screenplay by Terence Rattigan is of a ... Read More:

VHS : Hobson's Choice [1954]
For those who didn't know, and I was one of them, a Hobson's choice is a free choice, but where only one option is really available. At the end of Hobson's Choice, a fine, vulgar, poignant and very funny film directed by David Lean, this is what Henry Horatio Hobson faces. Elements of the plot are discussed.

Hobson (Charles Laughton) is a prosperous shoe and boot merchant in the small town of Salford, England. The time is the 1880s. Hobson is a widower, a blusterer, a man accustomed to his comforts, his drink and his ease. He is, thanks to Laughton, larger than life, a man we can laugh at but not a man we'd probably want as a neighbor. He has three daughters. Maggie (Brenda De Banzie) is 30. She is, says her father, "a bit ripe" for marriage at her age, and he ... Read More:

VHS : Dr Zhivago [1965]
I first saw this film 30 years ago and was bowled over by the scenery and the actors. Recently I decided to watch it with a more critical eye and found to my surprise that I was even more captivated by the vastness of the landscape which throughout the film forms the backdrop for the tragic love story that unfolds.
At first I thought that Sharif's Zhivago was too "soft" but as the film unfolded I realised that he was "the poet". Christie was as always perfect as Lara and we shouldn't forget Chaplin as the dutiful and loving wife. She plays the role with just the right amount of pathos. However it is Steiger and Courtney who carry the film.
The sight of Courtney standing at the front of a military train rushing past civilians that he neither sees or hears. Here is a man ... Read More:
