VHS : Doctor Who: Revenge of the Cybermen [1963]
I will confess that this story is not as good as I thought it would be but as time passes it does grow on me.

The cybermen themselves are back on track after their underused performance in 'The Invasion' and are seen to be a lot more cunning and manipulative. E.g. using human greed to aquire the services of a human agent. However I am disapointed that they don't have much involvement in the story until episode 3 but their performance makes up for that.

Tom Baker is excellent as the Doctor, as usual. His banter with the Cyberleader during episode three is a mixture of seriousness and silliness and thats what makes it so good.

Companions Harry and Sarah are seen to have their own mini adventure in this ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who Terror of the Zygons [1963]
This is one of the best episodes from the Gothic Hinchcliffe/Holmes era. It features UNIT, the horrific Zygons and a rather embarrassing Loch Ness Monster (obviously not the idea of it, but how it turned out) which is the only let down in an otherwise faultless episode that should be regarded as a vintage slice of Doctor Who. This is directed by Douglas Camfield who also went on to direct the excellent 'The Seeds of Doom'. It is also worth mentioning that the music score by Dudley Simpson is magnificently eerie, especially when the nurse escapes through the woods.

Finally, aren't the Zygons brilliant? - no disrespect to Russell T Davies, who's new Doctor Who series is fast, thrilling, fun and entertaining to watch, but he ain't ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who The E-Space Trilogy [1963]
The espace trilogy boasts three of the best ever Doctor Who stories, all very different in style and writing and feel. And each brilliant and imaginative.

First, there's Full Circle, with atmosphere and brilliant misty moments. Matthew Waterhouse makes his debut as Adric, and actually he isnt that bad an actor at all in my opinion. Tom Baker is serious and brilliant in this story, and Lalla is good as Romana. The atmosphere of the marsh scenes are really effective and believeable. And the marsh child is cute! A good start!!!

then theres State of Decay. A vampire story without so much blood and guts as in the trillions of Dracula movies, theres really no need for it. Doctor who hardly ever had much blood, and its the better ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - The Awakening/Frontios [1963]
A well written and well produced story, this boasts one of Peter Davison's finest ever portrayals of the Doctor. here is is strong, domineering, quirky, eccentric, funny and manipulative in turns, commanding the screen and dealing with human authorities and nasty, scheming alien creatures with equal amounts of authority. Anyone who thinks davsion is not one of the best Doctors needs look no further than this story to see the emergence of a giant, ready to become an unsurpassed legend just two stories later as he visits a set of titular Caves! Watch it and savour it, it is one of the finest! The dialog alone is a treat to ears! Watch it!

VHS : Dracula [1957]
This is the greatest Hammer film ever made. Starring the two mainstays of British Horror Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.
Terence Fisher (the best Hammer director) directs with style and James Bernard produced a score that would be used in variations by many Hammer films over the years. For any musicians out there the chord Bernard uses to signal Dracula's presence is an augmented chord...

Christopher Lee is magnificent as Count Dracula. Bela Lugosi may have starred in the role first but Lee is vastly superior in every respect: He has more screen presence (helped by being 6' 5"), is better looking and most crucially unlike Lugosi he can act.
As Van Helsing Peter Cushing is mesmerising. Whether he is carrying out a blood transfusion ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - The Dominators [1968]
This is not as good as the other surviving Troughton stories but its still not bad.If you can get it for cheap on Amazon then give it a try.The Quarks are interesting and although a little padded the story is fun.The main villain in this story is the Dominator Rago who while not riseing to the same level as villains like the Master, the Daleks and the Ice-Warriors is much better than the Invisible Enemy and Kroll probably with Taren Capel and Gavrok.Troughton is good but the Dulcians(aside Cully) are dull and boring. The action is resonable and I like the plan to turn Dulkis into a radioactive source of power.Give The Dominators a chance.

VHS : The Illustrated Man [1969]
We all know that in most cases the movie is a poor reflection of the book it is based on. This is in movie about stories within a story. It is very well paced to give you a feel for what is happening and time to anticipate what may happen. Rod Steiger has time to really act instead is being a cameo. The stories are naturally imaginative. The sets are well designed to bring out the nuances and display the implications of the character's actions. In all this is a very well designed movie for 1969.

A man is encountered who has skin Illustrations all over his body. Each illustration represents a tale from the future. The illustrations come to life and tell a tale of doom or impending doom. In this way ray Bradbury can tell related but different tales in this book. ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - The War Machines [1966]
I think I'm right in saying this is one of the first stories to be completely based on contemporary Earth and to benefit from the 'Yeti in the Loos at Tooting Bec' effect. It's atmospheric and very creepy to watch the War Machines trundle through the streets of London controlled by a super Computer in the then newly opened Post Office Tower. I suppose it was written to touch on the fears of where computerisation would lead and it does scare. It also is the story that introduces the sailor, Ben and the resourceful Polly who are both fun believable characters and an improvement on Dodo who feels very wooden. There are lighter bits, such as a policeman trying to go into the TARDIS thinking it's a real police box until he sees an out of order sign, and William Hartnell seems to be ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - The Krotons [1968]
In my opinion this is Doctor Who at his best and got me into Patrick Troughton. It explores the idea of slavery and the effects of a society not allowed to progress with a civilisation, the Gonds, forbidden to study science and acting as "brain food" for the mechanical Krotons. It also has that BBC 60's style about it where script dominates over visuals. A classic!
