VHS : D'Oyly Carte Opera Company - The Mikado [1992]
This anniversary production of The Mikado brings a fantastic cast and wonderful direction together with sensitivity to the original idea of W S Gilbert. Ko-Ko is extremely funny, with an up-to-date 'little list' and there is a rare re-writing of the Mikado's song. The chorus work and the set and fantastic achoustics at Buxton Opera House combine to make this a memorable production.

VHS : Liliana Cavani's La Traviata (1992) (TV) [1982]
A wonderful Traviata. Stratas and Domingo perfect for their parts. It can be watched with pleasure any number of times. The final scene was unbearably touching, in contrast with the rich animation and activity of the first Act.

How much longer must we wait for the 'live' version of the Domingo/Malfitano/Raimondi 'Tosca' to be reproduced on DVD? The settings are so perfect that Puccini himself would surely have approved!

VHS : The Marriage of Figaro [1973]
This version of The Marriage of Figaro will make the opera available for the appreciation of the average person in the street. English is used throughout with spoken dialogue.

Both the singing and dialogue are well articulated and one should have no difficulty in understanding what is being spoken or sung.

The performance is excellent and well produced.

In places it is a little vulgar, but then so was Motzart, and overall very funny. It belongs in the same category as the Whitehall farces but with the inclusion of some first class music.

In general this is a version not to be missed by any one other than those who feel that the operatic medium should be kept out of reach of the average person.

VHS : Ruddigore [1982]
Here the great partnership of composer, Arthur Sullivan, and librettist W.S. Gilbert are once again combined for RUDDIGORE, a supernatural operetta. D'oyly Carte perform with their usual sparkle with wonderful singing and all round good fun, The ghost scene of act 2 is exceptionally well done and deserves praise for 'Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd of Ruddigore' himself. A must for any Gilbert & Sullivam fan, or one who wishes to relive the delights of a memorable Ruddigore stage performance.

VHS : Billy Budd [1988]
I was fortunate enough to see the original stage version of this on its first performance with Thoams Allen in the title role. Wonderful powerful performance from all concerned and especially Peter Van Allen as John Claggart who gave the roll a menance and embodiment of twisted evil that I have never seen equalled in subsequent interpretations. The quality of the video may suffer from poor sound and dim lighting ( to add atmosphere?) But very well worth the investment and not yet equalled as a perfomance.

VHS : The Pirates Of Penzance [1982]
A good film in it's own right, the singers are good and professional, but the acting leaves much to be desired, starting off with a 21 year old Frederick who looks more like he's 35! The maidens are typically played by older women trying to look young and Ruth looks younger than all of them (including Mabel!) unfortunately this is a very visual play, and needs the acting that the UK turned American version had... I originally got this because I had not realised there was more than one version out.. only to find out that the Kevin Kline Angela Lansbury version has been deleted from the UK!!! *cries* Anyone can help me get hold of the best copy out there? please tell me! I canm't get it from America as my TV doesn't support NTSC which would be required...

This is a lovely production - Alagna and Mattila are really on top form. The staging and lighting is very attractive. But, it is has to be said that this is a very lugubrious opera and sometimes one just has enough of Verdi continuously moaning (musically!) and one just yearns for the infectious delight of Mozart!
