VHS : Warriors [1999]
One of the most outstanding BBC single dramas. Perhaps it shares the blame a little too evenly, but you cannot have everything.

Why is it that the BBC's outstanding dramas are never published in the UK. I think also of "Foreign Field" (USA only). The BBC seems to make a habit of only publishing its rubbish lately and ignoring its gems.

2.Carve Her Name With Pride [1958] starring: Virginia McKenna, Paul Scofield, Jack Warner, Denise Grey, Alain Saury
directed by: Lewis Gilbert (II)

VHS : The Guns Of Navarone [1961]
This is a superb war film. Based around the (fictional) efforts of a group of disparate SAS type specialists to destroy two huge guns blocking Allied martime accesss across the Aegean Sea, it has bags of tension, atmosphere and great characterisation. The team is comprised of Mallory (Gregory Peck), a mountaineer and reluctant "volunteer" for this task; Miller (David Niven), an English gentleman and thoroughly cynical explosives expert; Andrea Stavrou (Antony Quinn) a Cretan "man of honour" who has vowed to kill Mallory once the job is over to assuage his code of honour and avenge his family's death (which he blames on a previous miltary blunder by Mallory); Stanley Baker plays a knife expert who has lost his nerve; Irene Papas a proud Greek resistance worker ... VHS : Enemy At The Gates [2001]
This is one of the best war movies ever, in my opinion, together with 'Platoon' and 'Black Hawk Down'. It is very realistic, conveying masterly how it could be to be a sniper in Stalingrad. It is also very accurate historically, for example, it is true that, at the start of the battle, men were thrown in, on the Soviet side, without weapons. The story itself is also based on real events. Finally, the actors are simply brilliant, from Jude Law, to Rachel Weisz, to the little boy.

7.The Chain [1984] [1985] starring: Warren Mitchell, Leo McKern, Bernard Hill, Tony Westrope, Gary Waldhorn

VHS : The Chain [1984] [1985]
The story of a gang of moving men in London. Warren Mitchell is on great form as the mover who reads and quotes Plato, Aristotle and the Greek philosophers to his long suffering workmates.

Really a series of comic stories. At each house they go to they encounter one of the seven deadly sins, Lust, envy, greed, anger etc.. As they encounter them the moving men led by Warren Mitchell smooth out the problems and keep the chain moving.....

I will say no more I don't want to spoil the film by giving away too much.

Well worth buying. Warren Mitchell plays the part as only he can. I consider this to be one of my all time great comedies. I cant wait for it to be released in the USA .

VHS : Dunkirk [1958]
Brilliant! Historic film from WW2 showing true British 'grit' and shows the true meaning of the 'Dunkirk Spirit'. Keeps to events and Sir John Mills gives a very good performance.

VHS : War And Remembrance - Part 1 [1986]
I found this final series exciting and deeply satisfying. The previous two parts (Winds of War, and part one of this) called very strongly for completion, and that is what we have here... IN SPADES! I found the same wonderful sense of historical perspective that I noted in my review of part one... I felt I had got an overall grasp of the essentials of a very important and complex period, but also, that I had seen, spelled out in graphic detail, the results of the concentrated arrogance, stupidity, and self-indulgence that the Nazi ideal foisted on this suffering planet during that time. Nothing in my life so far had prepared me for the absolute horror revealed in this coverage... and nothing, I am sure, will ever allow me to forget it... which is really good. This lesson ... VHS : Till Death Us Do Part [1969]
I saw this film in England several years ago (I hadn't even heard about the tv serial) and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I've been hoping to find it on dvd ever since. Last night I ended up discussing the film with an English mate of mine in a Brussels bar, and he told me the film is now banned in Britain, because it's not p.c. I sincerely hope this is not the case. The film never shocked me and it did NOT turn me into a racist.
