VHS : The Haunting [1963]
There is no escaping the fact this movie has one of the most haunting use of camera movement ,light compositions and sound editing creating echoes to explosions in harmony with the horror which is chillingly psychological rather then bloody .

No dead cats or decapatitaed skulls or limbs can alternate for the haunted look on the agonized faces of the characters as they struggle to save themselves and their sanity ,the fact it is broodingly driving them to psychosis is presented as a brilliant chess game where the 4 protagonists love and loathe each other .

They are paranormal psychics or just mediums or ordinary human beings trying to come to terms with their own dilemmas is even more haunting then the house which is magnificently ... Read More:

VHS : Rosemary's Baby [1968]
I discovered that this film is loosely part of a Roman Polanski trilogy about the horrors of appartment/city living. Oh how true. I lived in an enormous flat in Westbourne Terrace in London and this film reminded me of it. I also stayed in the Chelsea Hotel in New York recently, and that had a bit of the same feel as the Dakota. Se7en was another film which picked up on the emotional disturbances of city life.

When there are lots of other lives going on around you, you can't help but feel lonely and a little scared. Rosemary is in a very vulnerable position when she gets pregnant. The film builds her sense of paranoia very gradually, which gives you the chill.

I was thinking that witchcraft and paranoia are related. If you are in ... Read More:

VHS : Peeping Tom [1960]

This is a strange movie about a man who was filmed constantly as a child and as he grew up by his father. Consequently, he now uses the camera himself - but for more sinister purposes! Though there are murders in this movie, it deals more with fear, shock and terror.

Anna Massey stars as a young woman celebrating her 21st Birthday and gets to know whom she believes is just a fellow lodger to actually be her Landlord.

Interesting piece of art from 1960.

Stars Moira Shearer, Esmond Knight, Nigel Davenport, and Miles Malleson in an unusual role as 'dirty old man'!

5.Eyes Without A Face (Les Yeux Sans Visage) [1960] starring: Pierre Brasseur, Alida Valli, Juliette Mayniel, Edith Scob, François Guérin

In this case the mad scientist is a sympathetic mad scientist. He was the one who caused the accident that destroyed his daughter's face (terrible burns, immersion in water and, of course, the rats). But Christiane Genessier (Edith Scob) survived, and her father, Dr. Genessier (Pierre Brasseur), with the assistance of his devoted nurse, Louise (Alida Valli), is determined to construct a new face for her. To do this, he surgically removes the faces of young women and grafts them onto the destroyed face of his daughter, all the while trying to find a solution to the problem of tissue rejection.

Eyes Without a Face, in my opinion, is not as good as the hype might have you believe, but it is nonetheless an unsettling, eery, well-made movie. One of the things that makes ... Read More:

I have always liked zombie films, and have watched Romeros original trilogy a number of times. But when I first saw this film in my local Blockbuster store I had to buy it. It was only avaliable to buy online. Thank God for Amazon. It is a classic film and really does what all good horror films should do. Suspense, gore and a little relieving comedy. The best thing about it is the extra twists. Having seen the 60's original you think you are gonna know what happens next...could you be more wrong. Extra gore, extra frights and one hell of a different ending make this film a great film even without its already used title.

VHS : Night Of The Living Dead - 25th Anniversary Documentary
For any die-hard NOTLD fan this documentary is an essential purchase, as it offers fascinating insites into the pre-production, production and ditribution areas, told by the bigwigs themselves. The problem with this documentary however is that it is so amateurishly made that it is quite hard to sit through all in one viewing. Throughout the duration of the documentary we are treated to a less than stimultaing view of Romero and his three colleagues sat in a room together reminiscing of old times. Of course, this is what fans of the film will be looking for, but there could have been more variety to the whole thing.

Saying that however, there are attempts to liven things up a bit, intercutting the monotonous room setting with clips of the film, and the documentary also includes interviews with famous horror ... Read More:
