VHS : Veronika Voss [1981]
One of Fassbinder's final films, Veronika Voss exists in the same cinematic world as the films that would bookend it's creation, with the story drawing parallels both thematically and subtextually with part two of the BRD trilogy, Lola, whilst employing the same use of stylised, theatrical mise-en-scene featured in his final film proper, Querelle. As a result of this, Veronkia Voss comes across as a much stranger film than it actually is, seeming like a post-modernist melange of social melodrama with elements of 40's cinematic pastiche, with Fassbinder and his cinematographer Xaver Schwarzenberger capturing the action in glorious black and white against some stunning & intricate examples of production design. Even the performances seem poised ... Read More:

VHS : The Most Desired Man [1996]
This film is proof that the word 'humour' CAN be translated into German after all! A brilliant comedy about a cheating, red-blooded hetero (Til Schweiger) who gets kicked out by his girlfriend and ends up staying with a gay friend until he finds his own space. A really fun and funny film to watch with plenty of scenes to make you laugh out loud - a very entertaining film. Highly recommended....so WATCH IT!

Misunderstood ? Yes. Pretentious ? Maybe. Compellingly watchable ? Definitely. On the surface, this appears to be the average techno thriller, but as is typical with Wim Wenders, he steps outside the rules and gives you something else. Visually, this film is stunning. The music, provided by Ry Cooder, is excellent - as is the rest of the soundtrack, which features U2, Eels and Tom Waits. The main story is about Bill Pullman's abuduction/salvation and the subsequent police investigation. Wenders then takes the elements typical in such films and plays with them : whether it's Loren Dean's good-guy cop or Gabriel Byrne's troubled research scientist, the lives of the characters are linked by one thing : violence. And the most striking thing about ... Read More:

Thymiane (Louise Brooks) not aware of the relationship her father had with another of his housekeepers Elisabeth (Sybille Schmitz); she is confused as to why the housekeeper had to leave and ultimately why the housekeeper committed suicide. This results in an offspring. The father pays the pharmacist's debt in exchange for making an honest woman of Thymiane. However she reneges and holds out for love; naturally this is unacceptable so she and her ... Read More:

I saw a Sam Shepherd play recently, so I was quite surprised to see that Sam Shepherd wrote this screenplay. But having seen two pieces of his work, you can detect a style. Shepherd examines the dark side of families, the frustrations, the pain, the fights and their consequences. He likes long monologues uncovering a web of events and feelings. I think the dialogue in this film is superb.

The landscape and the music is also rich in metaphor. Kinski is a wisperish, idealised beauty. The other adult characters are weatherbeaten by life's demands. This is a long, slow and often banal film, but it says something about real lives. I first saw this film over twenty years ago. It lingers and haunts, and that thematic strum of the guitar stays with you always ... Read More:

"nosferatu the vampyre" is the amazing journey of jonathan harker to castle dracula, forget hollywood or hammer this is in a class of its own.
the director werner herzog makes full use of the towns, countryside &ruined castle to tell the story sometimes without script.klaus kinski is
amazing as a ghostly-white gloomy figure of the vampyre with his manacing look
&when harker cuts his finger on the knife the count is almost animal-like
with his thirst for blood.this movie is not just a remake of the 1922 max shreck original but a tribute to both it & bram stokers novel dracula.
the brooding music& the counts journey on the ship to the mainland where he spreads the plague through millions of rats.but eventually draculas

Wim Wenders exposes the human frailty in all of us. Through an Angelic perspective of Berlin he paints a beautifully profound, poetic and intimate picture of the human psyche. It leaves images in the mind that will have a memorable and positive effect. It is beautifully filmed and ranks as one of the most profound films of the 20th Century. One to be cherished and enjoyed.

VHS : The American Friend [1977]
THE AMERICAN FRIEND is a clever film, but one that perhaps suffers from a being a little too smart for its own good. As an exploration of the cultural colonisation of Germany it is very effective, and WIM WENDERS fills the subtext of his film with a pessimistic tone that borders on paranoia, a redolent theme for a film of the 1970's. He depicts a featureless and grey Europe that is bending under the unbearable yolk of capitalism. A continent that has had its originality squeezed out of it by the duplicitous behaviour of people like Tom Ripley. A land of commerce and greed, rather than art. In fact art becomes the metaphorical device for the insidiousness of a consumer driven society, with both painting and the cinema acting as its agents. Of all European countries to feel the pinch ... VHS : Run Lola Run [1999]
This film may have had a tad of art to it but for the most part it looked like a practice RUN for "Groundhog Day." I appreciate the differences but there is nothing unique about this movie. The only pleasure is comparing this to the hundreds of other similar movies ("Déjà Vu", "Sticky Fingers of Time", "Happy Accidents", etc.)

The story is very basic; boyfriend loses mob money to bum on subway. Girlfriend (Franka Potente quite hansom if you discount the red hair) frantic to help must RUN to his rescuer obtaining 100,000 Deutschmarks (pre-Euro 2002) on the way. We are treated to several versions and there could have been more.

This film lends its self well to Blu-ray. And there are a few DVD extras ... Read More:
