VHS : Cinema Paradiso (Subtitled) [1989]
I loved this film (Director's cut) version. Most of the positives I should agree with in other comments. It may be too long for the typical cinema audience, but I should certainly recommend it to anyone who loves a film with depth, humour, love and a touch of life philosophy.

VHS : Life Is Beautiful [1999]
I would give this no stars at all. There was NOTHING beautiful about "life" for the Jews who went through the Holocaust. This is the most cynical, insensitive, arse-covering, insulting interpretation of the Holocaust ever to be produced. I hate it! And I hate that foolish Roberto Benigni for producing it.

VHS : Medea [1975]
If you have to see one film in your lifetime, make it Pasolini's Medea. It has everything - superb plot, location, acting, direction - and more. Maria Callas, magnificent on the screen as the abandoned wife Medea, steals your breath away as she first betrayes her people to help Jason steal the Golden Fleece, and then wreaks a terrible revenge when she is in turn betrayed by him for another woman. Pasolini's direction is gentle yet precise, allowing Callas to unfold in all the vehemence of her passion, elciting from her a great performance. A must for all lovers of great films!

VHS : The Battle Of Algiers [1965]
One of the best political films ever, about the 1954-1957 uprising of Algiers against French colonial rule. As the film shows, the uprising was brutally crushed, but the seeds of independence had already been sown, and in 1960 a new uprising, covering all Algeria, would rise up, and the country would become independent two years later. The French colonists, who numbered more than a million and who had lived in Algeria for more than a century, would be expelled after wards, marking a complete defeat for France. Made in 1965, with financing by the Algerian independent government, it is nevertheless surprisingly fair in some aspects. It shows the brutal terror tactics employed by the FLN (the main Algerian liberation group) like bombing bars and ... Read More:

VHS : Besieged [1999]
A slow, thoughtful, moving film. With David Thewlis very much on form. Leaves you with an awareness of the generosity of the human spirit.

VHS : Il Postino [1995]
If you like foreign film - you know those slow paced, sentimental pieces full of long shots of sun drenched countryside - then this is probably for you. The story of how a young man's life is changed forever by a poet is pleasantly engaging and amusing, but (to be honest) not that interesting. The film is a little too sentimental for my taste - the lives of the people are clearly extremely hard but we get no feeling for that or for the political corruption they endure. I was also annoyed by the film's ending. Without giving it away, the film seems to completely change character in the last ten minutes; its easy charm replaced by something unnecessarily harsh. Nevertheless it would make a nice romantic evening for lovers of foreign cinema.

7.Dark Eyes [1987] starring: Marcello Mastroianni, Marthe Keller, Yelena Safonova, Pina Cei, Vsevolod Larionov

VHS : Dark Eyes [1987]
This movie is one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. Based on a short story by Chekhov, it's a romantic love story, yet also funny. Marcello Mastroiani plays his best roll ever as a cynical, witty and very romantic liar. Really worth seeing.

8.Frivolous Lola [1998] starring: Serena Grandi, Andrea Occhipinti, Franco Interlenghi

VHS : Frivolous Lola [1998]
I rented this video out of curiosity. Tha porn film industry seems to have developed a much harder edge since the eighties and has become increasingly tasteless. However, this film is much more in the tradition of the soft porn cinema of the seventies, with it's threadbare plot and inconsequential scenes designed to show off as much naked flesh as possible. There are clear comparisons to be drawn between Tinto Brass and the 70's doyen of this art form, Russ Meyer. The essential difference being Meyer's fascination with implausibly gi-normous bosoms while Brass's preoccupation is with le derrier! This film is every bit as frivolous as it's title and is likely to appeal only to he more voyeuristic enthusiast. But I have to acknowledge that the leading ... Read More:

VHS : 1900 (a.k.a; Novecento) (1976)
I saw this film quite a few years ago, and i remember being swept away by the sheer beauty and scope of it. At the time i didn't know that many of the European stars, the main reason i watched it was for Robert De Niro and Donald Sutherland. Now of course it's chock full of people i really love, like the great Stefania Sandrelli, not to mention, Dominique Sanda and Alida Valli.
However for me having seen it again recently, it's the joy of seeing three of my all time favouriet actors right at their peak, De Niro, Sutherland & the wonderful Gerard Depardieu.
Bernardo Bertoluuci's films often leave me a bit cold, they of course are fantastically well made, brilliantly acted and usually very epic, or complex, but often they can i be just a little ... Read More:
