VHS : Witness For The Prosecution [1957]
I'm not usually one for courtroom dramas-but this 1957 movie is different. What makes it so different are the stars involved- Charles Laughton is superb as the London barrister defending Tyrone Power of murdering a wealthy widow-Marlene Dietrich is Power's treacherous wife -Elsa Lanchester is Laughton's nagging nurse- Una O'Connor is also superb as the murdered woman's maid- Laughton & real wife Lanchester were nominated for oscars for this movie. After the verdict is announced there is a superb twist in the final 5 minutes of the movie.

VHS : Some Like It Hot [1959]
This film appeals on so many levels - it's a farce, a sophisticated comedy, a gangster movie, a musical - some classic lines and probably a good contender for the best last line ever. Please watch this, it's that good.

VHS : Sabrina Fair [1954]
Everybody loves a good Cinderella story, especially if it has a dash of realism and a sense of humour. And unbaked souffles.

And methinks it also helps the case if you have Audrey Hepburn as the modern Cinderella-with-a-wit, which is the strongest point in the charming little romance called "Sabrina." While the chemistry between Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart is never entirely believable, the movie is as buoyant and whimsical as a summer daydream, but with way better dialogue ("Bounce please, ladies").

Sabrina Fairchild (Hepburn) is the daughter of the chauffeur at the palatial Larabee estate. She's also in love with the ne'er-do-well second son, David (William Holden) -- and even attempts suicide after seeing him with one of his ... Read More:

VHS : The Fortune Cookie [1967]
Excellent film, happily first viewed by myself courtesy of the good old BBC in the 70's, way back when they still showed decent films at Christmas (The Apartment etc) and every bit as enjoyable when watched again this weekend, & heaven knows on how many other occasions over the years!!.
I originally purchased this on the sadly dying Laserdisc format, but migrated when released on DVD for the convenience of not having to wrestle with 2 old disks and four sides. Think MGM have used the very same print for this issue as the minor imperfections in an otherwise superb image appear identical. Just go and buy it and immerse yourself in the fun, not sure why anyone would find the characters annoying, or feel that the film does not really go anywhere. The story ... Read More:

VHS : The Apartment [1960]
The Apartment is one of the essential Christmas movies along with the other black and white classics - It's a wonderful life, Miracle on 34th Street, Some like it hot and Scrooge. It's a fantastic film for a cold, dark December night and seems to work best at that time of year, just like The odd couple or Rear window seem to work best in summer.

VHS : The Seven Year Itch [1955]
This is a decent comedy and I enjoyed it on the whole. I'll be honest and say and the only real reason and I took an interested in the film and watched it is Marilyn Monroe. I've been trying to watch as many as her films as possible lately, ever since a study of Photography at college found me researching the icon of the silver screen. The good news is for me is that there was plenty of Marilyn to enjoy in this classic comedy. I was pleased to find that she is supported by a good cast and a very funny script, and the film on the whole is a real winner. There were several laugh out loud moments for me, and considering my young age and the fact this is a film from the 1950's I would say that's something pretty impressive. For me, though, the reason the film was great ... Read More:

VHS : One, Two, Three [1961]
Set just before the Berlin Wall went up and giving James Cagney's Coca Cola executive the impossible task of turning his boss's daughter's new East German communist husband into a model capitalist before daddy's plane lands and his chances of promotion - or even keeping his job - go out the window, One, Two, Three is mostly one of Billy Wilder's best comedies. Unfortunately it gets very loud and frantic in the last couple of reels as Horst Buccholz's performance starts to career out of control - quite ironic since the acting tips he constantly gave James Cagney throughout the shoot, combined with Wilder's dictatorial inflexibility, persuaded the star it was time to retire rather than carry on in a job he no longer enjoyed. As usual, Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond's script ... Read More:

VHS : Irma La Douce [1963]
Billy Wilder had the wonderful idea of transferring "Irma La Douce" the musical, to the screen. The only problem was, that when he started to make it, he thought(rather oddly)that the songs slowed down the action!
So what did he do?Tighten up the script, drop an odd song or two?NO,he just ditched ALL the sung lyrics, and used the remaining music as background.
So if you think this is the musical, you are going to be sadly disappointed.
As the reviewer above had said it's a great comedy, but NOT the musical that many people were(and are looking) for.

VHS : Stalag 17 [1952]
Billy Wilder's "Stalag 17" is cinematic simplicity at its best. It is a good old fashioned piece of entertainment that effectively establishes a simple and specific situation and then spins an absorbing yarn around it. Throw in several great William Holden moments and you have got yourself a winner of a film.

After a failed escape from the prison camp designated Stalag 17, the imprisoned soldiers start to suspect Sergeant J.J. Sefton (William Holden) of being a snitch. Sefton's reputation as an antisocial cynic certainly has not endeared him to his barrack-mates and they have no qualms over dishing out their own brand of justice on him. Sefton's guilt or innocence is eventually determined shortly before a crucial attempt to smuggle Lieutenant James Dunbar (Don Taylor) ... Read More:

She's ready, but are you ready for her? In this magnificent film, Billy Wilder bites the hands that feeds him. Gloria Swanson dazzles as desperate, faded silent movie star Norma Desmond, who is trying to claw her way back to the top after years of seclusion in her Hollywood mansion on Sunset Boulvard. However, her time has been and gone, and at fifty years old, this seems impossible. When Joe Gillis (Holden), an equally desperate screenwriter, happens upon her mansion while fleeing some debt collectors, he finds the perfect way to make some money by using Norma. However, will he be able to escape her wrath when she discovers the truth? After all, in the immortal words of Desmond, "No-one ever leaves a star, that's what makes one a star....."
