VHS : Siegfried [1924]
Siegfried (1924) filmed at UFA (The UFA Story ISBN: 0809094835). Director Fritz Lang, the original story "Siegfried's Tod" I have seen it with German subtitles and other versions with English subtitles. Paul Richter (Siegfried) was in 45 other films, from 1921 to 1972. The dragon is actually a machine with people inside. There are pulleys and gears and even fire.

Siegfried (Paul Richter) is the son of the King of Xnnetn (Sigmund). He forges his own sward so sharp that it cuts chicken feathers. He is told that near the Rhine at Worms the King of Burgundy (Gunter) and his sister, Kriemhild is at a castle. Siegfried, "On the hour I leave for Worms to win Kriemhild"..."Show me the way if you want to live!" He falls for the "I know a ... Read More:

VHS : It [1927]
I'd read a lot about Clara Bow before watching 'It' and the film certainly didn't disappoint. Like most BFI videos, they have used the best print available - so the picture quality is superb. Carl Davis's music score is also top drawer and it's a perfect accompaniment to the pictures. Oh yes, and Clara looks adorable! (forget what's on the video's front cover - BFI have used the most unflattering picture possible). If you hate silent films you'll hate this one. But if you don't, then you're in for a very enjoyable 76 minutes.

VHS : Laurel And Hardy - Liberty / Double Whoopee / Bacon Grabbers [1929]
"Liberty" was Laurel and Hardys first film released in 1929 and is a silent film. I'll give it **** because the scene on the tower block lasted a bit too long. "Double Whoopee" is one of the best Laurel and Hardy films I have ever seen yet even though it is Silent. A ***** film if you ask me, it is well worth watching. "Bacon Grabbers" is another very good silent film from 1929 but doesn't survive to a very good condition. The picture is sometimes too light or a bit too fuzzy ,nevertheless the film is a very good one and for that I give it *****. A tape well worth buying. Make it top of the list!

VHS : Faust [1926]
This is a 1926 classic of silent cinema. This new life that has been given to the film comes from the fact that the domestic (German) version has been restored and we can compare it with the export version that had survived. It is absolutely striking how the domestic version is tighter in the shooting, the taking and the cutting. The angle is slightly different and better, the contrast is a lot finer and more pronounced, which is very important for a black and white film. The cutting packs up many sequences and this increases the dramatic dimension and effect of the film. Apart from that you will not recognize any running version of the myth. The film is essentially centered on the love affair with Gretchen, but a long first part concentrates ... Read More:

VHS : The Cat And The Canary [1927]
If you have a sense of humor, like a good fright and are unsure whether or not you can tolerate the old silent films, this is one to start out with. It's clever, scary, eerie and funny. One critic said it looked like Hollywood gothic. The director, Paul Leni, came over from Germany and brought a whole bag of German film tricks with him...weird shadows on staircases, images superimposed on other images and billowing drapes. One character looks like a first cousin to Dr. Caligari. Another has fingernails that would make a manicurist retch.

An eccentric, rich old man died in his huge, grotesque mansion. His relatives had circled around him "like cats around a canary." He stipulated that his will was only to be opened twenty years after his death, ... Read More:

The 1931 production is an abridged version and disappointing as it did not show anything of Blackpool Tower, Pleasure beach or promenade mentioned in other versions.

VHS : Tabu [1931]
"Tabu" was filmed entirely in Tahiti and represents a most unusual collaboration between two legendary directors: F. W. Murnau ("Sunrise") and Robert J. Flaherty ("Nanook of the North"). "Tabu" tells the story of Matahi, a young fisherman, who falls in love with the beautiful Reri. But when their love is doomed by a tribal edict, which decrees the her to be "tabu" to all men, the couple run away. However, civilization does not prove to be any better for the star-crossed lovers. A beautiful film, just for its depiction of life on the South Sea Islands, "Tabu" is exactly the type of film you would think Murnau and Flaherty would make together. This was Murnau's last film. After making three movies in Hollywood he was disillusioned with the studio system and was ... Read More:

VHS : The Hunchback Of Notre Dame [1923]
Deaf and half-blind, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, feared & rejected by the people of Paris, becomes the unlikely protector of a poor gypsy girl.

Lon Chaney, master of disguise, solidified his celebrity with his portrayal of Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer, who is forever cut off from any semblance of a normal life. Although his makeup is certainly horrific, Chaney's role is not really monstrous: he is a lonely human desperately misused by Fate. Chaney's face speaks for him, communicating the tormenting anguish of his soul. While not quite as poignant as Charles Laughton's interpretation 16 years later, Chaney still makes of the role a Silent hallmark which has stood the test of time.

There are fairly lengthy segments in which ... Read More:
